I got another update sent in yesterday only to find out that I had given only a update of what I sunk on the second patrol. So my boat lost half of its Kill Flags. I sent in another report late last night with the corrected numbers, However I am almost done with my third patrol with a further 5 ships sunk and Two fishing boats sent to the bottom. It seems that you guys will have a hard time keeping up with me. I havent finished the third patrol as of yet and may take it slower to allow you guys a little break from me sending in reports. I am somewhat hoping that I dont find anymore ships out there as the first two patrols have sent me above the 100K mark. The third patrol will be sending my tonage to around 160K tonage sunk. Which is still way to high in my opinion. However I keep running into large tankers and such and just can help myself in wanting to sink them. In the last Three patrols I must have some bit of luck on my side as the number of duds have been low. No wonder why other skippers tonage rates arnt as high. there getting all the duds that I dont pick. On this patrol I have had maby one premature detonation and I have yet to have any duds. All though I have missed with a few for the most part I double and triple check my solutions and well like the last target. I fired two torpedos and I had two direct hits, even though the first cut him in half, I always fire two just incase the fist is a dud or premature.

Happy now that I convinced the roll of dice meter it was time to give me a cut down mid war tower so I am now sending in my last 2 patrol's report for the kill flag mod.

You 2 have helped to turn this into more of a personal simulator more than a general one for people. No matter what mod's people come out with this is what make's the game truly your's in nature and not just something to play but to have pride in both in game and here with the battle flag's so I want to thank you both very much for all of this and the hard work.

BTW I decieded to use the Tankers as the Large merchants seeing they are far few and inbetween and all other frieghters as the small one's thought it might make it easier for me and you guy's maybe an idea for everyone seeing this is how I keep my log book stat's

Each patrol has a kill record in my book and I break it down like so:

Survivors
Plane's
Warships
Cargo
Tankers

I keep a running total on tonage per patrol and just add hash marks next to each catagory to keep count.

Here is pic's of the before new Kill's are added so you can see the new Midwar Tower for the Sargo and yes my Bridge is customized.

You know, with this mod of yours I'm getting so attached to my boat I'm even turning down chances for New construction. I wonder if'n I can get the her home safe to the States after VJ day in SHIV, symbolically it would be nice since the RL Pompano is still out there on Eternal Patrol.

Don't worry about this artifact too much, I'm just chalking it up to an old Gal Friend of mine from Perth blowing her stack when I got in from that patrol....She was a right strange Sheila that one, Pretty but a bit off if you know what I mean.:lol:

I tried getting the USS Seahorse flag on my boat, but I'm not too happy with what I've accomplished. From a distance it looks ok:

but if you get close enough, you get to see some discoloration and color bleeding at the borders

I suspect it's the DDS program I use (couldn't get the nVidia DDS plug-in to work with my Photoshop, so I used DXTBMP and Paint Shop Pro 8).

I've uploaded a JSGME-ready version of the tower here (http://files.filefront.com/SS304+USS+Seahorse+Balao+rzip/;9113767;/fileinfo.html), which includes the original image I used as template, and a few reworks I've done on that. If you like what I've done, it's all yours. But I'm certain you guys can come up with something better :up:

The horsey's orientation is the least of my concerns (that's as easy as you just described to get it to point forward), it's the color bleeding that grates my nerves ;) Besides, if you look at the battle flag I included in the available download, you'll see that the seahorse is, in fact, facing to the left.

Yep, I have an idea. I'm guessing that whatever skin you chose for your own boat is also rendered on all other boats of the same type. This is just a guess, but it makes sense in that it would save greatly on the amount of data that would have to be passed when the game started. Instead of having to pass a bunch of textures to each players computer, the game would have to pass, well, nothing other than the type and configuration of each boat.

I'm also guessing that the folks you played with did not see anything on the boats except the skin that they have installed for the boat.

We don't have a skin for the Tuna yet and are having a bit of difficulty finding an appropriate patch for the flag. The only one I can find is a total immersion killer (has the dates of service, number of patrols and so forth on it and isn't much of a patch without that info). Hopefully we can find a good one for it soon.

To paraphrase a line from a movie that several of us are probably old enough to remember "I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no commisionin' plaques", but I'll see if sqk7744 had it on his to do list (along with a long list of new boats) or I'll learn how to do it.

Thanks for the props. The trick is to magnify the work as far as you can (1600% for me) and then you can see the slightly transparent sections and correct them one pixel at a time. Don't feel bad about your attempt, until a friend of mine showed me what to look for and how to correct it, I'd have been pulling what little is left of my hair out trying to figure out the "bleeding edges" myself.

Well, I'm trying to put the Grayback's emblem on her conning tower but have had some problems.
1. I didn't know what to put on it exactly... I could not simply take the emblen on the battle flag...
2. So, I decide to put the SS number as we can see on the pictures in the early war (it isn't a sexy emblem, I would prefer a blonde siren, but it is all I can do...)
3. Somebody can help me please... I'm not a skinner! My problem is on the pictures...

Ah, but it IS reversed. If you look at any of the emblems, the same part of the emblem faces the front of the boat. They are mirror images of each other. For instance, the Seahorse faces the rear of the boat on both sides. If the emblem were not reversed, it would face the front on one side and the rear on the other.

Yeah, well...my next career will be with manual targeting. The six-digit-figure tonnage is overkill :p I haven't even dared look at my kill tally as of late, I'm just about to embark on Patrol 23 and it's still April '44! BTW, do (Heavy) Cruisers count towards the CV/BB category?

Thanks, should be soon on the conning tower. I can add the hull numbers on the bow (just need to experiment a little with font and size). The conning tower is a different story because it would be reversed on one side or the other.

Well, actually, what I had in mind was more like this :

Killflag in the usual place and the boat number on the hull at the bow like I see in the pictures of the actual boat (except black lettering instead of white).

Let me know what you think. I'm in the process of uploading it at the moment, but if you want it on the conning tower I could add that instead, but it would be backwards on one side. The way it is now, it is correctly shown on both sides of the hull.

Well, there's no reason why you couldn't have kill symbols on the conning tower with no graphic ship symbol (like the octopus for the Drum). Putting the boat number on the conning tower is a bit of a letdown since one side would be reversed.

@VonHammer Glad you liked it that way. Sorry for any confusion about what I had in mind.

Sorry, cap'n, but the flag stays with the boat. I recently got a new boat myself and it was sad to see my old flag go, but it's just that much incentive to go out and fill up a new flag. She's third in line for creation, so hopefully it won't be too long before the conning tower kit will be available. The flag has been created, so as soon as you finish your first patrol I'll be able to do your battle flag and signature flag.

Thanks, jonesy. I know what you mean about reading the boats history. When I get a new boat, I'm almost afraid to check out it's history for fear of what I might find. It's very educational though. I've learned more about the war from playing this game than I ever did in school.

I added the boat number on the hull at the bow like I've been doing for others. If you don't want the number on the hull, just remove the NSS_Balao_O01.dds from the BlahBlahBlah\Data\Submarine\NSS_Balao folder in the conning tower kit before you enable it with JSGME.

I'm about to start a new construction career with the USS Guardfish (SS217), my first with 1.4 patch. It would be wonderfull to have the hull numbers applied to the bow of the boat, like those DT made for the Balao, as I start the sea trials, only to later add the conning tower emblem as the boat becomes fully operational and is sent to pearl harbour...
I know it may look a little weird, but it would really make a big difference to my game, since I try to roleplay my campaigns. :lol:
Like I said, I understand this is really a personal request, so feel free to skip it entirely if it would take too much of your time...

Seeing I was asked in a P.M. reciently.

With the new work I am doing I have to make sure the mod's I use in the game do not get in the way of the new work so there will be no more compatability issues and problems.

So until I am sure it is done I do not have the Campaign stuff in my game I want to use. Once I do this I will then have to start a new Campaign.

I do not want you guys to have to do all of my sub Kill flag work over and over again until I am sure I do not have to restart the game again.

Yesterday I requested a new boat, the USS Permit, but did not have a link to the boat's battle flag at the time. I have since found one here:

As far as I know, the only thing outstanding is a SS179 USS Plunger skin for nik112. Other than that, it's pretty much caught up (unless something slipped in that I didn't know about). Of course, as soon as I say that, a thousand update requests will come flying in :rotfl:

You guys are doing absolutely OUTSTANDING work and I really appreciate the opportunity to make the request for the USS Harder. A very good friend of mine served as a radio operator (electronics tech) on the Harder for her 4th and 5th war patrols, but was reassigned to the USS Gunnell just prior to CDR Sam Dealey taking the Harder on her 6th and final/eternal patrol. My friend Art, who told numerous stories of his life on the boats over the seven years I knew him and even sent me a copy of Harder's patrol logs, passed away a couple of years ago in Napa, CA. I chose the USS Harder in his honor.

USS HARDER (SS 257)
August 24, 1944 - 78 Men Lost
Additional information provided by Captain C.C. Brock, USN(Ret)

Commander S.D. Dealey guided his eminently successful fighting ship, HARDER, out of the harbor at Fremantle, Australia on 5 August 1944 to begin the sixth war patrol of that vessel. In company with HAKE, HARDER conducted training exercises en route to Darwin. These two submarines topped off with fuel at Darwin, and on 13 August, together with HADDO, left for their assigned area west of Luzon, P.I. They were to patrol as a coordinated attack or wolf pack group, with Cdr. Dealey in charge.

On the afternoon of 20 August 1944, RAY, patrolling the same area, tracked a large convoy into Paluan Bay on the northwestern coast of Mindoro. An hour after surfacing, she contacted HARDER just outside the bay and held a megaphone conversation with Sam Dealey. Dealey formulated a plan for concentrated dawn wolf pack attack on the convoy. HARDER came alongside HADDO at 0130 on the morning of August 21 and told Lt. Cmdr. C.W. Nimitz, Jr., that at least 16 enemy ships were holed up in the bay. When the convoy made its exit at dawn (as convoys were wont to do) RAY was to approach from the northwest, HADDO from the west, and HARDER from the southwest. GUITARRO also had been drafted by Dealey, and was to attack from the northwest near Cape Calavite Lighthouse.

During the attacks which ensued, four ships, totaling 22,000 tons, were sunk, by Japanese admission. It is thought likely that HARDER sank one of them.

On the following day, HADDO and HARDER conducted a combined attack on three small vessels off Bataan. All three were sunk; these were the coast defense vessels MATSUWA, SADO and HIBURI. HADDO and HARDER each received credit for sinking one vessel, and shared credit for the third sinking.

The morning of 23 August HADDO contacted a tanker escorted by a destroyer, and blew the bow off the destroyer in a down-the-throat shot. She fired her last torpedo in this attack, and in response to urgent calls for assistance, HAKE and HARDER rendezvoused with her. HADDO, being out of torpedoes, “received Sam’s blessing” and left his wolf pack, heading south. HAKE and HARDER discussed plans for finishing off the damaged destroyer and then departed for their common objective off Caiman Point.

At 0453 on the morning of August 24th, HAKE dove not far from Caiman Point and about four miles off Hermana Major Island, west coast of Luzon, with HARDER in sight 4500 yards south of her. HAKE heard echo ranging to the south and soon sighted two ships. At first they appeared to be a three-stack light cruiser and a destroyer, but upon later inspection were identified as a three-stack Thai destroyer (the PHRA RUANG, of 1,035 tons) and a minesweeper of less than 1,000 tons. HAKE broke off the attack and headed north when the target zigged away apparently to enter Dasol Bay, while the minesweeper stayed outside.

At 0647 upon coming to a northerly course, HARDER’s periscope was seen dead ahead at about 600-700 yards. Sound also reported faint screws on the bearing, so HAKE turned away toward the south. At this point the minesweeper gave three strong pings, whereupon HAKE saw her 2,000 yards away swinging toward the two submarines. HAKE figured he had sound contact and went deep. The enemy kept pinging, but seemed to have the two targets located and to be undecided what to do about it. At 0728, HAKE heard 15 rapid depth charges, none close. Two sets of screws were heard and each continued pinging on either quarter of HAKE as she evaded to the westward. By 0955 all was quiet.

HARDER never was heard from again. Japanese records reveal that an antisubmarine attack was made on the same day with 440 pound depth charges. The enemy said, “much oil, wood chips and cork floated in the neighborhood.” Presumably HARDER perished in this depth charge attack.

HARDER was officially credited with having sunk 20.5 enemy ships (the half credit was given for a ship sunk cooperatively with HADDO). This gave HARDER a total of 82,500 tons sunk and she damaged seven ships for 29,000 tons.

Her first patrol was conducted in Empire waters, starting in June 1943. She sank three freighters, and damaged seriously a freighter-transport, another freighter, a transport and a tanker. She went to the Empire again for her second patrol, and sank three freighters and a tanker, while she damaged a trawler.

HARDER was a part of wolf pack, of which PARGO and SNOOK were the other members, on her third patrol. In the open sea north of the Marianas, she sank a freighter, three freighter- transports and an armed trawler.

HARDER’s fourth patrol was in the western Carolines. On April 1, 1944 she made a daring rescue of a Navy fighter pilot shot down at Woleai Island early that morning during a strike by a fast carrier task force. In mid afternoon on April 13, 1944 she was buzzed by a Japanese patrol plane which brought the destroyer IKAZUCHI to the scene. The DD was attacked and sunk along about sunset. Four nights later she sank a freighter and damaged a second destroyer.

HARDER departed Perth for her fifth patrol in the Celebes Sea on May 26, 1944. She picked up coast watchers from northeastern Borneo, and gave a very valuable contact report on a major task force leaving Tawi Tawi anchorage, Sulu Archipelago, preparing to engage in the first Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Shortly thereafter, while patrolling in the Tawi Tawi area she sank five destroyers over a five day period beginning on June 6, 1944. First to go down was MINAZUKI, followed the next day by HAYANAMI. Three days later on the 9th, she sank the TANIKAZE and another unidentified DD during the same attack; and sank another unidentified DD on the 10th.

Sinking of these last two unidentified DD's could not be verified shortly after the war by the Joint Army Navy Assessments Committee, but subsequent analysis of the data, published in 1989 by the U.S. Naval Institute, has supported the initial claim. Moreover, Sam Dealey and others in the fire control party observed the sinking of the fourth DD; and the fifth DD broke up almost on top of HARDER after being hit with a down the throat shot. By the time HARDER returned from this patrol, she had earned the reputation of being the Submarine Force's most terrible opponent of destroyers. Indeed, "five DD's in five days" was electrifying news throughout the submarine force."

HARDER received the Presidential Unit Citation for her first five patrols, and Commander Dealey was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for sinking five enemy combatant vessels on his outstandingly successful fifth war patrol.

Impressive artwork! I can't express how pleased I am that you made those for me and I know that Art would also be pleased as I used to discuss SHI with him - he was a ham radio operator and also used computers a lot. He was very good at using graphics programs even into his 80's. He once gave me a tour of the Napa Valley area when I spent the night with him. Had a business trip to Lockheed in Sunnyvale that time - I worked for the US Navy as an engineer on the SSBN FBM systems for 30+ years - Trident I and Trident II primarily and Lockheed built the missiles. I certainly appreciate your honoring those veterans who still serve, those who have retired and those who have passed from this earth.

Thanks also for posting the information on the history of the USS Harder. It's interesting that there is a tie-in between CDR Dealey and JFK. Dealey Plaza in Dallas, where President Kennedy was assasinated, was named after Sam Dealey's uncle G.B. Dealey. The Dealey's were in the newspaper publishing business. A DE in the early 50's was named after CDR Sam Dealey.
