[REL] Kill Flags Mod

I really love the kill flag mod and its time for a new career in game but before i join this mod just a question:

What shall i do when i am offered a new boat ? That means: Will my so far prosperities taken to the new boat or is it better to keep the first chosen sub? :hmm: (What was historical correct ?)

Normally i start my careers with the Narwhal class but i dont want to take such sub for the whole campaign. Then i would pick another sub. :smug::smug:

Hey, kwbgjh2. Those are some good questions. As we implement the mod, the kill flags would stay with your old boat and you'd start with a clean flag and boat, but you can keep your tonnage on the flag.

As far as what is historically correct, I'm not positive, but I don't think skippers were offered boats, I believe they were issued orders. It's totally up to you whether to take a new boat or not, but passing up a newer boat would mean staying with older technology and capabilities, so you'd be passing up opportunities for more kills.

Unfortunately, parts of the textures are used in multiple places and, on some of the subs, this means that the conning tower artwork will show up in some strange places. I wish I knew of some way around this, but there doesn't seem to be one.

It's possible to remap the model, but if I did it, it would look worse than it started out :rotfl:. It would probably end up looking something like a '57 Buick Special.

Hello all,

Could someone can explain the Battle Flag's patrol report for me please? As I think I may have submitted my report in error. I did not enter the number of warships I sunk, I sank a number of DD's, do they count? Also, there was no where for me to enter the liner I sank. The screenshot of my first patrol log should explain the problem. I would appreciate any clarification on this.

Yep, a DD counts as a warship. A liner counts as a merchant ship. Basically, any ship whose function is combat would be a warship and any other ship would be either a merchant or a small merchant. Mostly I define small merchants as fishing boats and sampans.

If the count that you sent in is incorrect, please resubmit your report and I'll correct the one that is in line for completion at the moment.

For #1 on the list, what should I put.

Number 1 on the list is just which skin you want to use for the boat (black, clean, weathered, heavy weathered) depending on what Fooskins are available for the boat class. If you don't specify a skin, I'll take a black and a clean/weathered Fooskin and combine them so that during the early part of the war the sub will be black and later in the war it will change to the grey scheme.

Yep, I thought it was a cool feature, too. Whether the skin changes or not depends on which boat (and sometimes which skin). In the submarines section at Battleflags, the sub skin name should tell you whether it changes or not. If the name contains the word "combo" then it changes. If it says black, it stays black, etc.

Duly noted on the skin requested:up: As for the resolution, it's not the same as your monitor resolution. The resolution of the skin is just the size of the texture that is used to paint the 3D object. Obviously, the larger the texture, the more details that can be put on it. The current hi-res textures are as large as is practical already.

If you check out the links on the first post in this thread, you'll see one for requesting a new boat and one for a patrol report. There is no need to change the name of your boat because someone else is using it unless you really want to. Many killflags participants share boats. If you check the subskin section in Battleflags and the boat you want is not there, then fill in the commissioning request and I'll build it for you. If it is there already, just fill out a patrol report and I'll put your killflags on it. Make sure that you let me know which skin you are using if your boat has multiple skin options. If the boat you want has a skin, but it's not the color you want (for example, if it's black but you want a combo skin) then fill out the commissioning request and let me know what color you want (black, weathered or combo) and I'll make one up for you (choices are always good).

I was wondering about this. I saw in old movie (operation petticoat?) a sub fire a fish right up a beach and explode on a land target. In SHIV what actually happens when you fire a fish at the land? Does it explode or will it scramble up the land on momentum?

And you could just, you know, shoot a truck with the deck gun if your close enough to land.

Nope, there's no limit. Let me look at the files. While I'm looking, let me know what mods you're using. In particular, if you're using TM, there's a work around for the later war towers.

Your patrol reports need to reflect the totals for your boat. That way there's no confusion about how many kills are on the flags and the boat.

I like that idea, TK. I'll have to get with SQK to see if he can change the patrol report form to allow for medals and we'll have to come up with some appropriate ribbons for the flags.

As for tha alpha channel, it can serve a couple of purposes. The only one that I'm familiar with is to determine which parts of the texture appear in the game. For instance, on the textures for the command bar at the bottom of the screen, there are sections of the texture that are for the background, buttons and icons that go on the buttons. on the icons, for instance, only the parts of the icon that are included in the alpha layer are displayed over top of the button graphic. The parts of the icon that are not included in the alpha layer are "invisible". Basically the way I look at the alpha layer is that it is a selection of the graphic that is visible and the rest of the graphic is invisible. If you open up one of the GUI files (for instance E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4\Data\Menu\Gui\UserRadio.dds, substituting your install folder for "E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4") in photoshop, then click "select" on the menu bar, click load selection then click OK while the channel is set at "Alpha 1", then the alpha layer will show as selected. Conversely, in order to create (or modify) and alpha channel, you can select the areas that you want to be in the alpha, click select in the menu bar, click save selection, change channel to alpha 1 (or create new and name it alpha 1), then click the radio button for the option you want to perform (New channel, Add to channel, Subtract from channel or Intersect with channel) then click OK and the alpha will be modified/created according to your entries.

As far as the conning tower and submarine T02 and T02 files go, save them as a DXT1 with no alpha. This reduces the size of the texture files since the alpha isn't needed. For the O01 files, save as a DXT5 (interpolated alpha) if you modify those files at all. Most of the time, you won't need to modify those. I only do so to put the hull numbers in the bow of the subs so that they won't be mirrored on the left side.

Finally, for the dates that the sub changes from black to grey (if the skin is set up that way), you'll need to look at two different files, one for the sub body and one for the conning tower. For the sub body, for instance, for the Gato, look at the E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4\Data\UPCData\UPCUnitsData\UnitParts1Gato.upc (again substituting your game install folder for "E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4"). Open it up with your favorite text editor and search for T01 and T02 and you will see the lines that control the dates that the textures are used.

The conning tower is a little more complicated in that the textures used on it can be specified in the actual .dat file for the conning tower. If you'll look here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=867808&postcount=859), you'll see a work around for a texture conflict with another mod that demonstrates how the texture is specified in the .dat file for the conning tower. In the E:\Games\Silent Hunter 4\Data\Submarine\NSS_Gato\NSS_Gato.upc you'll see (several lines down at the first part of the file) the dates that each conning tower is used.

The medal awards on the flag are just a fabulous idea and look terrific.

Hopefully, the following will save you some space and, more important, some work.

In the case of subsequent awards for the same medal after the first, a gold star was added to the ribbon instead of the bearer wearing two ribbons. This persisted until award #6 when the combined five gold stars would then be represented by a single silver star. Award #7 would then be another gold star. So someone with 8 awards would have the basic ribbon adorned with a silver and two gold stars.

I've never heard a good story as to why silver is higher than gold with the US military, but it is consistent with the rank insignia where ENS and LCDR wear gold insignia and their seniors, LTJG and CDR, wear the same insignia in silver.

I came back on tonight just to suggest the enlargement of the ribbons; great minds.... and like that.

When using the RL stars system for multiple awards, no one can have more than six ribbons active max, CMOH, NC, SS, BS, NCM & PH. Hence the ribbons themselves can be a lot larger, have room for nice stars and still not crowd the flag.

Would the ribbons follow the skipper or the boat? My vote would be for the skipper as in RL. In RL the patrol pin would also follow the skipper.

Ships have had ribbons painted on their bridges since before I entered the navy in '65. These are campaign ribbons tho, not valor awards as exist in the game. The only exception is the Purple Heart which is awarded to a ship that has suffered war damage in action.

Small merchants I'm putting down as junks/sampans/tugs/trawlers, anything over 1k tons goes down as maru.

I tried to get my head wrapped around that whole alpha channel thing but it doesn't compute (I'm digitally challenged)

With foobor's skin from your site, my boat has the rather pretty light gray skin and the boat number on the bow which looks absolutely perfect, but since it's only april 1943 it may not quite be historical. I think i'll just leave it as is but if anyone can expand on this in layman's terms that would be good :)

@ Te Kaha: Seeing the Cabrilla, SS288 really brings back memories. I was a 20 year old kid when I joined the USNR in 1960. Cabrilla was my monthly meeting unit in Houston Texas until I went on active duty and sub school in 1961. This was my first experience on a Fleet Boat.

As I remember, she was very clean boat and a stationary unit that never went to sea. Take good of her...:up:...and good hunting.

uhm so my USS Sunfish is on the list of downloadable foobor's skins but it's not on the list of commissioned subs at the top of this thread or on battleflags.net
Sqk7744 is the only one who can update the list and he has a real life (including a job):D, so he can't always keep up with the additions. That did just cause me to have an idea (dangerous proposition for me:lol:). I may get sqk to put a link to an image on the first thread that lists all the boats that are done and keep that image on the server. That way, I can update it whenever I make a new boat. Thanks for bringing that up:up:

I just grabbed the skin and filed a report but now I'm in doubt, lol If the boat is already in the submarine section at battleflags.net, then it's already been commissioned, so there wouldn't be any commission plaque, sorry.

Small merchants I'm putting down as junks/sampans/tugs/trawlers, anything over 1k tons goes down as maru. That's the way I recommend doing it, too.

I tried to get my head wrapped around that whole alpha channel thing but it doesn't compute (I'm digitally challenged)

With foobor's skin from your site, my boat has the rather pretty light gray skin and the boat number on the bow which looks absolutely perfect, but since it's only april 1943 it may not quite be historical. I think i'll just leave it as is but if anyone can expand on this in layman's terms that would be good :)
When the first person that requests a boat files the commission request, then they specify which skin they want painted on. If there is a boat that is already painted, but you'd like a different skin used (i.e. black, clean, weathered or combo-black early war, weathered late war), then just let me know when you file your patrol report that you'd like a different skin. The best way to do that would be to put the skin you want it on after the name of the sub. No commission plaque just 'cause it's a different skin, though.

what's the usual eta for this project? (would hate to file my next report while you're putting the effort into the first two reports)
ETA depends on what I have going on. Usually you'll see it within a day or two of your request. It would be best not to file a new report until you've received your last one (that lessens the possibility of my little brain getting confused:doh:). If you go longer than three days and haven't seen your update, then send me a PM to make sure I got it or whether I'm just running behind.

Hey, Rowddy. Which site is it you're having problems with? As far as I know, you don't have to register at Battleflags.net to request a flag or a new sub. Check out the first post in this thread and there are links to do everything you need to do to get and update your flags.

I can't figure out how i get a battleflag myself though or just a cartoon (originely i was looking to something to personalise my Sub. I'm not very long in here and it looked so dull on the outside ;) then someone pointed out this thread and i have been browsing here to figure out how it works. I have a Porpoise classe Sub i downloaded a Black HR Skin and then i'm lost.. :oops: How do i get the cartoon on the tower?? and if i fill-out the form after a mission how is it being updated so that it shows on your sub? and how do link my sub to them?? lol i have so many question i dunno where to start here:oops:

No problem. Let's start at the start:D

First, in order to get the sub "skin" onto the sub, you need to download, install and use JSGME (available here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123908)).

Then, look at the list of boats in the fleet in the first post in this thread (here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=122870)) and see if the sub that you have in the game is on the list.

If it is on the list, then you go here (http://battleflags.net/submarines/index.php) and download the sub skin, extract it onto your MODS folder and activate it with JSGME.

If it's not on the list, then go here (http://battleflags.net/request/request.php) and submit a request for the new boat. We'll put it together and post back here (and send you a personal message) when it's done.

No matter which is the case, after your first patrol, go here (http://battleflags.net/report/report.php) and fill out a patrol report. Make sure to give us the totals (not just the single patrol results). The medals and tonnage should be for your entire career and every thing else should be for just the submarine that you are currently the skipper of.

Btw does sinking a japanase sub also counts?? I didn't get e record of that though for some reason. It was a big Sub though.

Yep, a sub counts as a warship. If you didn't get credit for it, it's up to you whether to report it or not. Also, no need to send in three reports, just send in one with everything on it and we'll be all set.

Each patrol may not be much, but later on in the game, you'll see that it adds up:up:

The kills are for the boat that the flag is for, so, no, the kills don't carry over from one flag to another. The medals and total tonnage do carry over, though. Basically, everything at the very bottom of the flag carries over.

I am about ready to request a boat be commissioned. The battle flags idea is new to me.

Here are few basic questions re the battleflag/emblem:

May I request an emblem be created? I do not know if this is possible? If so, I would like to submit an attachment with my proposed emblem, which is a scanned Xmas card of a woman on skis. I was thinking the skis could be converted into torpedoes, with an American Flag on the front off the sweater. I do not know if the is possible? If it is, to whom do I send the attachment, so they can work from it? Below the emblem, I want the ships name, USS Barbarinna. I will submit the information for battle flag as directed.

I read through several pages of posts to try to figure this out, but gave up because there are so many.

Or, if you got the picture from someplace on the internet, just send a link to where you got it and we'll take it from there. To be honest (and totally sarcastic:D) it takes about as long as it takes me to do it. Seriously, it depends on the volume and how much real life interferes (which basically means that, as long as the Falcons are playing football, don't count on too much getting done on Sunday:rotfl:). Now, really seriously, I try to shoot for no longer than a 2 day turnaround but sometimes, when everyone plays a lot at the same time, it might make it to 3 days.

Also, I know that small ships are the fishing boats and such, but what about slightly bigger ones, such as trawlers, or even smaller freighters?

Well, this gets a little fuzzy. In my opinion, a trawler would be a small merchant along with sampans and fishing boats. Some will say that anything below a certain tonnage is a small merchant, but we could probably find several people who could argue for weeks over what that tonnage number would be, so I leave it up to the user. You can define a small merchant however you would like to. After all, I'm not going to demand that you send in your game save files to verify your kills:D

As far as the armed trawler, I wouldn't count it as a warship. Again, in my opinion, the only warships are those vessels whose sole purpose is the pursuit of blowing things up (whether they were built for that purpose or converted to it).

Always report totals. When you get a new boat, keep reporting totals for the tonnage and the medals, but start over on the sunken vessels. In other words, the stuff on the top part of the flag (above the medals) is for the boat and from the medals down is for the captain. I downloaded a program to convert tga files to dds files. I want to use Drqagon's a mod that shows Vargas drawings when the game starts. However, his mod selection is limited to around 10 Vargas drawings. I was hoping to to convert the Vargas tga files in Fred's Captain Desk mod to dds and transfer them to the Dragon's mod to increase its variety. However the conversion program I downloaded could not do it. Any suggestions?

I posted a drawing a couple posts up and asked if that might work, too. That Photobucket link isn't working for me. Did you set up your account as public or private? I can usually make a photo look drawing or cartoon like, it just depends on the photo and how well my brain is working that day:D

I don't know anything about a conversion program, but Paint.net (http://www.paint.net/) is a free graphics editing program that handles both tga and dds formats.

It's the captain's medals. On the skin, if there is more than one skin available for a boat, make sure and specify which skin you're using on your patrol report. If there is a version of a boat available and you want a different version of the same boat, please use the commissioning request so that we know we need to build a new version of the boat.

Yep, unfortunately, it is common. The game uses portions of the texture for more than one spot. Without completely remapping the tower (way totally, absotively, posilutely beyond my skill set) that's gonna happen.

To set your sig up, right click on the link for the sig , select "copy link location", then, when you set up your signature put the following in :

Yep, and as long as you're skippering the same boat, you won't need to change your sig link at all because it will automatically update when I upload the new image to sqk's server. If it doesn't update right away, try hitting the refresh key so your browser will get the new image instead of using the cached one on your system.

Sorry, but i have a Problem with the mod "Fall of the rising sun" (Its based on the "Trigger Maru-Mod"): Now is can see the texture of the boat...but not the emblem or the kill flags...First i converted the PDS Files into DDS Files and then "updated the Textures from The USS-TUNA_fOOBOR_mINOR LACTANZ:::SO FAR SO GOOD::: But than i couldn´t see the kill flags on the Tower...whatt can i do????

(My boat is a Tambor class: USS TUNA SS203)

As for your problem seeing the killflags, you shouldn't be having to convert anything. Just extract the skin as you do with any other mod and activate with JSGME. I didn't think that Trigger Maru had any problems with the tambor class, but I haven't looked at the Fall of the Rising Sun mod to see if there are any similar problems. I'll take a look at it as soon as I can to see if there is a solution if the mod has changed something.

In the meantime, let me know if the problem is taken care of by just activating the sub skin with JSGME. Thanks.

@ lactanz Thanks for letting me know the date you are at and the other info about what you see in the game after updating the skin. That will help quite a bit in getting the problem solved. I'm downloading the mod you're using now (will take a little while because of the size) and I'll take a look at what the problem might be. I'll also go back and review the work on your sub skin to make sure I didn't do something wrong.

Well, the problem is a problem:D The Fall of the Rising Sun mod uses the Gato tower at two different time spans during the war. There are a couple of ways to solve the problem.

The first way would be to mod the mod to use the Tambor tower like the original game does. This is a bit complicated and I wouldn't recommend it.

The other method involves copying and renaming the tower textures in the killflags sub skin. Three of the four emblem positions line up exactly where they should be, but one of them is a little bit off. The instructions on this method are as follows:

After you extract the sub skin got into the SS203 USS Tuna_FooBor Minor_lactanz\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex folder and make copies of the NSS_TamborTower_T01.dds and NSS_TamborTower_T02.dds files. Then rename the copies to NSS_GatoTower_T01.dds and NSS_GatoTower_T02.dds respectively.

Then activate the sub skin with JSGME. That should take care of the problem. You will have to do the file copying and renaming each time you receive an update. This fix will also apply to any killflag skin for a Tambor submarine used with the FOTRS mod.

Let me know how this works for you and if you have any problems.

Unless you get a new boat before you get a new conning tower, then the emblems will end up being in the right place and all will be good. As far as the flags go, everything should be fine with them. It's funny you mentioned that. We had a flag for her and there was a skin on the server, but it had no emblem on it:hmm:Must have been a brain flatulation on my part one day when we were building boats:rotfl:. At the beginning of a campaign they do not have Gato's. I found the emblem pasted on a Gato later in the campaign. Do I report kills when I am in another boat or do I wait until I am given an option to select a Gato? I suppose no one will know, whatever I do, but I thought I would ask. The emblem looks good on the Gato.

What I would do is send in patrol reports for whatever boat you have that is not a Gato and I'll do battle and fillflags. Then when you get a Gato, switch to your custom boat and send patrol reports in for the Barbarinna. Make sure that your patrol reports include total tonnage and medals for your career, but just the kills for the boat that you are reporting on.

I start a career from Pearl, Dec 1942

I choose a gato class and the realims settings I like

I start the carrer but the conning tower is plain black...

shouldnt wahoo`s chief head be there?

I will try with another gato and report... edit: same with flying fish, all black sub, no insignia..... IDEAS?
