KILL FLAGS FAQS:

1) The game assigns you a boat (or you assign yourself one by making changes to some game files)

2) You go to Battleflags.net submarine list (http://battleflags.net/submarines/index.php) and look in your class of boat to see if we have already "built" your sub.

3a) If the sub is there, you download it, extract it, put it in your MODS folder and activate it like any mod.

3b) If the sub is not there, then you request it here (http://battleflags.net/request/request.php) and we "build it" and let you know when it's done so you can download it. If you can't find an emblem (or trust us completely to give you a good one) we have sources to get emblems and patches. If you go looking for an emblem/patch yourself, make sure and get the best quality and largest image you can find. The bigger and better the patch image is, the better the patch will look on the flag and the emblem will look on the sub.

4) At the end of each patrol, you file a patrol report at the link in the first post in this thread. In this patrol report you give us your TOTALS for the sub that you are currently in command of.

If you have any more questions, just keep asking 'till we get it answered.

Here's how it works:
We're releasing default subs in batches.
Hop over to http://battleflags.net/

1. First you get a hi-res fooskin (http://www.fooskin.com/) -FooFighters' with a boat emblem on it.

2. Click on the 'Download a boat (http://battleflags.net/submarines/index.php)' link.

3. Then after your patrol, let us know your results via SEND KILL FLAG REPORT (http://battleflags.net/report/report.php) link and form.

4. We'll modify the tower file (T01.dds or T02) you are using and then we'll post a .zip file in the appropriate empty folder structure with just those two files on the Kills Flags update page by your user name and send you a PM.

5. Click on KILL FLAGS UPDATES (http://battleflags.net/killflags/index.php) and find your subsim username, click again.

6. Left-click or right-click on your update and save to a temp folder.

7. Extract and copy & paste into your SH4\MODS folder.

8. Run JSGME.
This will overwrite just the new dds files (Conning Tower Kill Flags files), but keep the original skin you installed as this will save on download sizes.

9. Run SH4

10. ENJOY YOUR HARD EARNED KILLS!

A: Yes, it's just a texture mod, easy on/off via JSGME...now having said that...no Promises and use at own risk if installing out of Port and/or during a Patrol, starting a career, on Leap Year, under a full moon, etc. ;)

Permissions:
- No images, materials, absolutely nothing, within The Kill Flags Mod may be used for any commercial product of any size, shape or form.

- The Kill Flags Mod is freeware, made by the SH4 modding community. All permissions of individual mods are subject to their author's permissions.

By allowing folks to Download completed boats, then to stack on to them with kills, it has helped allot vs. a one on one release.

Wow this looks really cool. I just took command of the USS Drum (SS-228) and am so far having a good campaign. I've only done one war patrol but I just sent in a flag request, If you want to put the embelm on any other Gato skin go ahead. Mods like this really healp with the atmosphere of the game, not to mention you can personalize your submarine. Cheers!

I will see if the next time I go down there I can get a picture af a battle flag a crew member drew in which shows a Japanese sub being blown up, I cant remember which boat it is for though, however it is a really cool flag.

It's the USS Tuna SS-203 (still a Tambor class). I wonder if it's possible to edit some file in SH4 to change the name of the boat? Maybe that way I can still be the Tautog.

I finally started a career that I might actually be able to get through without restarting, so I took your hint (from the screenshots thread in the SH4 forum) and sent you my career stats for a kill flag. No rush, I know life is hectic. Just wanted to tell you what a great site you have put together and :o has it grown quickly.

The signature Battle flag is what I mean that is the one that didn't get updated and when I just looked at the Battle flag's normal one's it still says out on patrol with no update's but that is no big deal just want the new Mini Signature flag. Again no rush just pointing it out.

Be sure to have plenty of landing party favors. A keg of Heineken wouldn't hurt either.:lol:

Seriously, let's say you are inserting a spy. You will get an objective point on your map (like any other objective). It will be on the shore of enemy territory (like near Osaka). Go there. You have to get very close, probably so close that you will have to surface in order not to run aground. When you are close enough you will get a message asking you if you want to deploy the spy or postpone (sort of like when you are asked if you want to refit or end a patrol). I highly recommend you postpone and stop your boat to 0 knots because if you choose to deploy while your boat is moving forward, the raft that gets deployed makes an awful scraping sound against your boat. But don't worry, just add a little reverse speed to get away from the raft and then get the heck out of there to deeper water.

Oh, and always plan to deploy landing parties at night . . . for obvious reasons.

@ Latterboy1 http://www.copyfonts.com/ is an excellent source of fonts to download for free. It solved my missing font problem while working on mine. Just download the one you need and copy/paste it into your C:\Windows\fonts folder and you're all set.

Hmmm . . . it's on my work PC and I'm at home now. But I know it's quite a few of them. In fact it seems to be most of them. I tried to figure out how to select the free myriad fonts from that free site but so far I can only let PS select a replacement font automatically.

In any case, as soon as I opened one of those .dds files I knew I was a lost cause. I can't make heads or tails of those textures! :D

and it's just the headings that use the Myriad fonts. The font for the numbers on the kill flags is available at the free site if you don't have it.
Letterboy1, the only textures you need to worry about on the sub are the tower textures. The others you can just leave as is.

AFAIK the USS 176 Perch had no emblem or patch. All the pics I've seen it had a big 176 painted on the tower. Historically speaking I'm fine with that. I got really excited when I researched and read about the final battle with 2 destroyers and a cruiser and that the wreck of the Perch had been discovered in the Java sea. Hi ironkross, and welcome to the thread! Some of the S Class had emblems, but most did not. The '176' would have been used in pre-war and extended refit.

There are two conning tower texture files NSS_SClass_Tower_T01.dds and NSS_SClass_Tower_T02.dds.

During the war at some point ( varies for class ) there is a switch. This is why we ask for the Month/year on our Kill Flags report form. Since this is a manual mod, your tower will have to be updated at that time via sending us a new Report.

2. I just got back to my home port in Pearl because I thought I was supposed to go to Surabaya. :damn: Once I got back to base I did get the cut down conning tower. And an extra kill (total 3) to go on the tower. Should I resubmit now? Since my boat is not up yet. I had no idea when I asked about it that I would be getting the tower upgraded this soon. Kind of like a premonition huh? ;)

Trying to resubmit my boat and info. What cfg./saves file do I find the tonnage sunk in? Is it the highest numbered? I looked there and it has my tonnage at 0. As I said I am in port, shouldn't the save list all my tons?

Actually, the technical problem involved my computer rather than the game itself.. :-?
No permanent damage luckily, but I lost all savegames among other files.
So, I'm starting a new campaign right now, in command of the USS Guardfish - Gato class.

Makes perfect sense, apart from one bit which is that my sub is a S-18 class boat, not a Salmon. I've got the "S-CLASS Fooskin GREY HI-RES" skin from this location (http://battleflags.net/submarines/S-18/) installed with my first Battle Flags tower.

Edit - I'll do another request then and will enter the total amount of sinking. Had a good run yesterday so I could use an updated tower now anyway. ;)

Hi sqk7744,
I just sent an e-mail the other day to you guys about my kill flag update. At first it was returned with a request to reply to make sure I wasn't a spammer; I'm not sure you guys got it. I got another e-mail saying I was on the "white list." Does that mean you got it?

Anyway, just wanted to point out that when I did my report for my second patrol, I went to get my update but it was the entire skin (not just the two updated texture files) with the flags of my second patrol. Perhaps somebody thought I was reporting for the first time? I probably didn't report correctly . . . can you see what I did wrong so I won't do it again? I should have:

4 destroyers and 3 maru from the first patrol
6 maru and 1 small merchant from the second patrol

Currently the Letterboy folder has one USS Drum skin with the flags of my second patrol only.

Thanks and again, I apologize if I reported incorrectly.

I just sent an e-mail the other day to you guys about my kill flag update. At first it was returned with a request to reply to make sure I wasn't a spammer; I'm not sure you guys got it. I got another e-mail saying I was on the "white list." Does that mean you got it?

Anyway, just wanted to point out that when I did my report for my second patrol, I went to get my update but it was the entire skin (not just the two updated texture files) with the flags of my second patrol. Perhaps somebody thought I was reporting for the first time? I probably didn't report correctly . . . can you see what I did wrong so I won't do it again? I should have:

4 destroyers and 3 maru from the first patrol
6 maru and 1 small merchant from the second patrol

Currently the Letterboy folder has one USS Drum skin with the flags of my second patrol only.

I just sent the end of Patrol update for the Pompano's 4th war patrol, I noticed you have not been able to update the kills for the third patrol yet, so if you could skip the first update and use the second one it will save you both some work. Thanks again for a great mod and helping to provide that one extra attachment to "our" boats that make every engagement more "hair-raising"! I'm not taking some risks that I might if'n I wasn't concerned for the safety of my ship and crew. Not to mention the "Pomp's" reputation with the Squadron.

It's just my two cents but I would think anything that is not over 1000 tons would be considered small, however I would also believe that an unarmed Tug would fit this category also.

Basically I consider anything specifically designed for Trans-oceanic movement of Cargo, Bulk Liquids, and/or Passengers fits into the "Large" Merchants, (Maru), category, anything else designed for short haul, coastal type service should go into the "small" merchant one. Which leaves only the ones designed to go sailing around looking for things to Shoot, Depth Charge, or Ram would go into the "Naval" category.

I hope this is helpful, of course any other opinions / considerations are welcome.

I sent a request for a kill flag for my USS Drum, but things seem to be going haywire with that career, so I've put in on hold for a while and started a new one to see if the hiccups were career-specific or affected my whole game.

Btw, maybe one of you guys can explain this: no matter what I do, my patrol count is stuck at 0 and I keep getting First Patrol Awards for my USS Tuna with which I started that career!

Anyway, new career has gotten off to a damn good start, I must say! 1 Escort Carrier and 1 Heavy Cruiser sent to Davey Jone's locker on my very first patrol! :D So you might receive a Kill Flag request for the USS Flying Fish in the next day or two :cool:

Off to d/l the skin for that boat!

Nah , i just seen a patrol log on the net where an 83 tonner was classed as a maru . Maybe for the sake of killflags and SH4 , class anything that says its a sampan to be a small merchant . Everything else a maru . Battleships is another story .

You are doing some great skinning!

We've seen the S class also uses textures over again ( really, just re-calling locations on the texture map instead of providing new texture areas) resulting in what you discovered. Usually this occurs in later years or the mid-tower conversion period of the Tambors.

We should make a hit list of known skins/boat classes and years.

As for the Mirror-flip, try the roman numeral V :up:

Just a clarification: when you guys are offered and accept a new sub, do you keep your kill tally from your previous boat or do you start from scratch? I just got a Gato-class sub, but I've scored pretty high with my previous boat (a Tambor). Since I decided to keep this career, despite the bugged medal awards (keep getting 1st patrol medals on my third patrol!), I'd like to know how to request my Kill Flag (coincidentally, I got a USS Drum again!).

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the Commisioning Plaques supposed to show the Captain that first requested a kill flag for each boat? That way each succeding Captain will know who the "Commisioning CO" was.

The Crew of this Old engine Aft Tanker had radioed and said they wanted to be "immortalized" on the Pompano's conning tower, but they must have had "Cold Feet" as the ship wouldn't sink. (One Torpedo amidships and over one hundred rounds of 3"/50 ammunition and still wouldn't go down.)

Well that was from there plaque. I downsized it myself to match the size of the screenshot.Guess I cut a l little off the top. I still have the orignal and when I get the battle flag to go with it I was goinng to redo my Sig.

Ok now I see what you meen. Yes The commanders name is wrong for me lol. when they do just put Don on it. Lt Commander Captiandon. Of course I spelt Captain wrong in my signin name So people wouldlnt think I was a real Captain. That was for Flightsim though. My name is the same there as for the Forums.

I used to fly in CFS2 alot, Me and two friends Started a Squadron in it and modeled it after a real squadron in WW2. It was the VMF-323. I painted our Aircraft to match 4 of the orignal aircraft from the Squadron. We also had several pages honoring the orignal squadron. We had grown to 50 members and had a great time.... The zone was gone and we lost connection with eachother

I'm not upset about you using the plaque, I think it looks excellent, I thought that the plaques were made for everyone, If you wish to use it go for it, If you happen to be able to change the name on it to yours (wish I could be able to do work like these gentlemen) even better for you as it's your name showing.

The Sturgeons looking good at the moment so far sunk another 7 ships at the moment on patrol 8 heading to the South China Sea from Brisbane using TM1.6.5 and ROW, I don't know why Ubi haven't tried to recruit some of the Modders here as they are making Amazing things happen with SH4.

Yep I am just working on the end of my second patrol. I do think I made a major mistake and sunk some friendly ships. Some of the sink icons on the map are in blue and greeen. They wernt flying flags and was unscertin abou them and sunk them. I may have to remove a few flags from my boat after this patrol. It will also make the ingame tonage not match my flag. Of course I would rather have it reflect only on the Japanese ships I have sunk. The few that I have sunk that may have been friendly are three Small split Freighters and 10 fishing boats. All the tankers that I have sunk are most certan are Japanese as they were flying flags. I installed RSRD and was unaware that it added alot of friendly and netural shipping, which is my Fault as I should have read a little more on what RSRD changed. Its a very good Mod and I would recommend it to everyone.

When i put killflags on your subs conning tower i put it on a clean tower . So i need your total kills for that sub . I do not add killflags onto a previous conning tower with previous killflags .
