7. Subsim 10th Anniversary/2007 Submarine Almanac published.

Yes, can't avoid a little self-promotion on this one. In early 2007 the little homepage that began Jan. 26, 1997 turned 10 years old and that's a pretty big deal around here. Subsim has been the center of the submarine/naval game world since Command Aces of the Deep appeared, and we've played a role in the focus of games such as Fighting Steel, Silent Hunter II, Destroyer Command, Jane's 688(I), Sub Command, Silent Hunter 3, and 4, Dangerous Waters, and others.  When Subsim first started, simulations were as plentiful as Britney Spears reports. Ten years later, and sims are pretty rare birds, but submarine sims are still considered commercially viable, and the members of the Subsim community are a part of that success. To celebrate the anniversary, we created a special book with stories and art from Subsim members, professional essays from history & naval experts; the 2007 Submarine Almanac (anniversary edition). It proved so successful, we followed up with the 2008 edition, just released in December 2007. Here's to ten more years of subsims, friendship, and fun. By the time you read this, Subsim will be a few weeks away from 11 years on the web!

6. Tesseraction Games signs with publisher Resurgent Interactives for Enigma sequel, Enigma: Sink The Hood

This was welcome news and a bit of a surprise! Veteran game developer and visionary Kelly Asay and the Tesseraction crew were last heard from plotting an updated version of Iron Wolves called Deep Six (it sure sounded sweet, man). After hammering GMX Media, their previous publisher, in court over serious breach of contract and nonpayment issues, it was thought Tesseraction would have the momentum to see Deep Six into the water. However, the studio slipped into neutral in 2006. Then in October 2007, it was announced that Resurgent Entertainment of Baton Rouge, Louisiana bought the studio and is funding not only an add-on chapter to the original Enigma game but a sequel. The promise of multiplayer sweetens the deal.

5. Shells of Fury sneaks up on us.

This game showed up on our sonar in mid-2006, and Drebbel contacted the German publisher immediately. A World War One U-boat subsim? Count us in! However, the release date slipped several times until August 2007. Our man David "Horsa" Millichope  turned in a splendid review of Shells of Fury, saying, "this has to be one of the strangest subsims released in quite a while. It takes on a neglected era (WWI), looks very retro, and appears to have been almost dumped on the market with no real ambition or pretensions. Having said all of that I believe it’s a little gem that’ll pay back its rather modest price with a lot of replay value and in a very fresh setting. I actually find it quite easy to love this little title. Imagine a rather bedraggled, slightly lame puppy with big soulful eyes arriving on your doorstep, and you get the idea." Shells of Fury does have game and an underground mod community has blossomed, giving the sim fresh legs and new life. This game is certainly worth a look for guys who like U-boats and subs.
