4. Silent Hunter 4 mod community
After
Silent Hunter 4 was released, the Subsim mod gurus went right to work,
adding new interface mods, radio files, fixing and tweaking various gameplay
attributes, and generally giving subsim players more features to enjoy.
Standout mod masters include Captain Cox, Ducimus, Leovampire, Diving
Duck, Jimimadrid, JScones, Oakgroove, and Beery, to mention a few. Probably
the pinnacle SH4 mod to date is
Trigger
Maru, a comprehensive collection of improvements. Here's to the SH4 Mod
gurus, salute!

Silent Hunter 4 v1.3 patch or else
Seriously, when was the last time a computer game was released
prematurely and the community had to badger the game company for a patch?
Oh, that often, eh? Well, it happened with Silent Hunter 4; the dev team
released two significant patches and then Ubisoft went silent. Two months
passed and no official word of a much-needed third patch. Players felt
betrayed, buying the game in basically an unfinished state and left to
stagger through missions with some terrible AI clunkers, TDC errors, forced
career retirement, mixed units of measurement, and other bugs. We
posted a thread asking players to affirm the necessity of another patch
and over 1300 people responded in less than a week. Shortly after, Ubisoft
acknowledged plans to follow up on critical items. Now, if this happens for
Silent Hunter 5, we're going to know they planned it this way.

2. Grey Wolves GWX 2.0 expansion
The
Grey Wolves team released their Magnum Opus in December, a
comprehensive expansion mod for Silent Hunter III that replaces their
earlier expansions and should keep Das Boot players very busy in 2008. Along
with the well-crafted
600+ page manual, GWX 2.0
added a huge list of additions and tweaks, including battleships, warships,
planes, AI subs, merchants of every stripe, sound files, music, graphic
fixes, dozens and dozens of new missions, and tons more.
As GWX team leader Kpt Lehman remarked, "We started out as puppies digging
in the garden... and well... we think we found China!" China indeed, if not
the whole Asian continent.
The importance of their work cannot be overstated, GWX simply anchored the
massive popularity of
Silent Hunter III as
the best U-boat subsim ever, for many years to come.
