USS Cod Submarine Memorial

It’s Labor Day weekend and with it the Cleveland National Air Show thunders into Cleveland skies. Our participation in the event is Big Henry, our Tiffin, Ohio-built WWII-era USN torpedo crane truck. Big Henry is about 80 years old and carries a Mark 14-5 exercise torpedo in one of his two cradles. It’s a 6-ton rolling advertisement for our more static WWII-era fleet sub. But it’s time for the Ford flat head V-8 that powers our unique historic vehicle to get a complete rebuild. Starting his engine is becoming more art than engineering. If you know any automotive restoration folks capable of helping, let us know. Until then, we will display this last operating and intact example of the 268 units built by Hanson Brake and Clutch, with a case of ether starting spray cans handy along with some prayers.

Check out the airshow running through Monday at Burke Lakefront Airport, and stop by for a tour of USS Cod!
