Silent Steel

TACTICS

A tough game to finish but fun and rewarding, as well as humorous. That Master Chief cracks me up! Here are some scenario hints and a step-by-step walk-through which tells you exactly what to choose. Use them sparingly and enjoy.


FIRST SCENARIO



DISC 1
1. Have the message from COMSUBLANT brought to you.
2. Keep the XO up to date.
3. Brief sonar ASAP.
4. Put Foster on continual supervision of sonar.
5. Talk with the Carrier Battle group for any new developments.
6. Get your officer's input on where the enemy sub may be, and be open with them.
7. Remember patrol is 1st priority at this point - but keep your sonar watches doubled.
8. Keep Weps on alert.
9. In sonar, pursue the strange sound.
10. Make sure there really is a problem.
11. Inquire about a hull search and send out a diver.


DISC 4
12. Have the device checked out by the Chief Engineer.
13. Focus on possible suspects.
14. Question everyone.
15. Interrogate your prime suspect and confine him.


DISC 3
16. Be aggressive during the battle scenes. Go to battle stations!
17. Know where you are in relationship to the target.
18. Prepare to fight back.
19. Fire ASAP.
20. Take measures to counteract the torpedo.
21. Do all you can to find out who the enemy is, and make sure it's not a friendly.
22. Destroy your torpedo; It may be a friendly.
23. Contact the Admiral on the SATCOM.
24. You've got questions at this point - try to get them answered.
25. Another sub - check with sonar on where all the players are.
26. Look at the charts and listen to Master Chief.
27. Don't hide - prepare to fire.
28. Don't be afraid to fire.
29. Break contact, and fire again.
30. Learn from past experience - There is no American sub.
31. Be specific with your officers. Follow through with your orders.


DISC 4
32. Don't take severe measures unless you have strong facts.
33. Try to talk him out of the gun.
34. Another battle - be aggressive.
35. Don't be afraid to shoot.
36. Find out where you stand with enemies.
37. They stuck their necks out for you. It's your turn now.
38. Fire at the enemy until he goes down.


 

SECOND SCENARIO



DISC 1
1. Retrieve the message from COMSUBLANT ASAP.
2. Keep your XO up to date, share the message with him.
3. Brief sonar ASAP.
4. Have Foster supervise sonar.
5. Keep in contact with the Carrier Battle group for any new developments.
6. Get your officer's input about enemy sub's possible location - be candid about the situation.
7. Be open with your officers.
8. Remember that the patrol is still the 1st priority at this point - but keep your sonar watches doubled.
9. First check the status of the weapons group, then make sure tubes are loaded.
10. In sonar pursue the sources of the strange sound.
11. Make sure there really is a problem.
12. Consider a hull search.
13. The Kilo is the priority, but keep a hull search in mind for the future.


DISC 2
14. Take actions to escape.
15. Silence equals survival for evading enemies.
16. Danger's still out there. You're still a target.
17. Make sure you know who you are shooting at.
18. He who fights and runs away lets the Battle Group handle it.
19. Inquire about any friendly subs in the area.
20. Focus on the Kilo.
21. Check the charts.


DISC 3
22. Be aggressive during the battle scenes. Go to battle stations!
23. Do what you can to distract the torpedo.
24. Don't hide; make preparations to fire.
25. Fire immediately.
26. Run away!
27. As you already know, be aggressive.
28. Be specific with you officers. Follow through with your orders.
29. Attempt to find out WHY people are firing at you. Now is the time to do a hull search.


DISC 4
30. Have the device checked out right there.
31. Pursue the suspect angle.
32. Did anything odd happen before sailing?
33. Follow through with any questioning and restrain the suspect.
34. Don't take extreme measures unless you know facts.
35. Try to talk him out of the gun.
36. Don't hide out; face any enemies.
37. Once again; be aggressive.
38. Know where you stand with your enemies.
39. Help out your allies.
40. Fire!
41. Keep firing!
42. Save your session and then try all of the different answers to see ending variants.



TOP SECRET * SILENT STEEL WALK-THROUGH * TOP SECRET
DISC 1
SCENARIO 1


1. Have the message from COMSUBLANT brought to you.

  • This is the Captain.
  • Okay. Read it to me.
  • Have someone bring it to me.


2. Keep the XO up to date.

  • Dismissed, Wheeler, and have the XO come to my cabin.
  • This is as serious as it gets, XO. Our patrol area may be compromised.


3. Brief sonar ASAP.

  • How she got out is anybody's guess. I want a full tactical dump on Kilo class subs and let's brief sonar right away.


4. Put Foster on continual supervision of sonar.

  • I want you supervising sonar, Mr. Foster. Drag a cot in here if you have to.


5. Talk with the Carrier Battle group for any new developments.

  • We were liaison-authorized to talk to the Carrier Battle Group. Let's get 'em on the horn.


6. Get your officer's input on where the enemy sub may be, and be open with them.

  • I received the message from COMSUBLANT, Sir. Do you have additional information about the compromise of my patrol area?


7. Remember patrol is 1st priority at this point - but keep your sonar watches doubled.

  • At best speed, what are the probable positions of a submarine that exited the Mediterranean 72 hours ago?
  • Kilo class submarine. Export type...possibly with a performance upgrade.
  • Standard speed will be sufficient, but let's go deep. See that the sonar watches are doubled.


8. Keep weapons on alert.

  • How's your readiness posture, Weps?
  • I'd like to put us on an increased readiness footing. Double your watch section until further notice.


9. In sonar, pursue the strange sound.

  • Was it a malfunction in your gear?
  • Best guess, Ensign...what is it?


10. Make sure there really is a problem.

  • Do we have a problem or are we worrying about nothing?


11. Inquire about a hull search and send out a diver.

  • How long would a hull search take?
  • I want to lock out a diver, XO. I want a thorough hull search.


DISC 4

12. Have the device checked out by the ChEng.

  • Get it back to the Chief Engineer. I want to know what it is, what it does and what it's doing on my ship.


13. Focus on possible suspects.

  • I'm willing to listen to a list of suspects. Who had the opportunity...or motive to stick that thing on the hull?


14. Question everyone.

  • What about you, Wheeler. Did you pass by the fairwater before we submerged?
  • No, Mr. Wheeler you are not. Master Chief, get Holland in here.
  • Why were you late, Holland?
  • Who told you to put the homing device on the sail, Holland?
  • Convince me, Holland. I really want to believe you.
  • Why were you late, Holland?


15. Interrogate your prime suspect and confine him.

  • I'm placing you under arrest, Petty Officer Holland. The charge is sabotage. Master Chief, confine him in the quiet spaces.


DISC 3

16. Be aggressive at the battle scenes - Battle stations!

  • Sound the general alarm. Battle stations, torpedo.


17. Know where you stand with the target.

  • Get a range and bearing to the target.


18. Prepare to fight back.

  • Continue to close with target vessel. Prepare to launch torpedoes.


19. Fire ASAP.

  • Fire tube one!


20. Take measures to counteract the torpedo.

  • Take evasive maneuvers, deploy counter measures.


21. Do all you can to find out who the enemy is, and make sure it's not a friendly.

  • XO, bring us about. Let's get a real good look at this guy.


22. Destroy your torpedo; It may be an American sub.

  • Contact the LA boat on the underwater phone.


23. Contact the Admiral on the SATCOM.

  • Weapons, command detonate Mk48.


24. You've got questions at this point - try to get them answered.

  • First thing I want to do is get a message off to the battle group.
  • I've got a lot to say to that Admiral. Put me on the SATCOM.
  • This is the commanding officer of the USS Idaho and who might you be?
  • I've got some questions. I hope you have some answers. Why is a Libyan submarine a threat to us?
  • How did a Kilo boat pass the Med?


25. Another sub - check with sonar on where all the players are.

  • Do you have a contact, Ensign?
  • Can you give me a course and speed on this contact?
     

26. Look at the charts and listen to Master Chief.

  • I want to get a look at the chart. Give me an update on our situation.
  • The question is, why is this Kilo hunting us?
  • You got about 20 seconds to get me interested, Master Chief...start talking.


27. Don't hide - prepare to fire.

  • Get me a firing solution.


28. Don't be afraid to fire.

  • Fire tube one.


29. Break contact. and fire again.

  • Break contact.


30. Learn from past experience - There's no American sub.

  • Place Mk 48 in command mode. Order the torpedo to kill Sierra-25.


31. Follow through with your complete orders.

  • I gave you an order, XO. Put the Mk 48 into command mode. Order it to kill Sierra-25.


DISC 4

32. Don't take severe measures unless you have strong facts.

  • I'm going to need a little more than a damn tea bag!


33. Try to talk him out of the gun.

  • Put the gun down Wheeler, you don't really want to hurt anyone.


34. Another battle - be aggressive.

  • Get me a firing solution.


35. Don't be afraid to shoot.

  • Match bearings and shoot.


36. Find out where you stand with enemies.

  • Mr. Foster, What's the time to Mk 48 impact.


37. Help your allies.

  • Come to periscope depth. Give him a nav fix.


38. Fire at the enemy until he goes down.

  • Shoot!
  • Ready tube two.


39. Save your session and then try all of the answers.

  • Just doing our duty, sir.
  • Surface the ship, XO...I think I'd like to get a little air.

TIPS

WIN 95

**Disable all screen savers - including AFTER DARK programs.


DOESN'T INSTALL

1.  Re-profile video through Media player
          -- START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, MULTIMEDIA, MEDIA PLAYER. Click on
     DEVICE, VIDEO FOR WINDOWS.  At LOOKIN select drive "D"
     (or cd-rom drive).  Highlight  "Video1 (AVI)", press OK.  Press
     the PLAY ARROW on the Media Player. 

2.  Re-Install VFW11E
          -- Select START, RUN.  In "Open", type  d:\VFW11e\setup.exe click
     OK. Click "Continue". Click "Restart Windows" when installation
     is compete.  If VFW11E doesn't install contact Video card
     manufacturer for updated drivers.

3.  Re-Install Steel
          -- Select START, RUN.  In "Open", type d:\setup click OK.  Follow
     on-screen instructions.


INSTALLS BUT DOESN'T PLAY

1.  Window vs. full screen
          -- Select START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, MULTIMEDIA, VIDEO tab,
     select  "WINDOW Original Size", click OK.

2. Preferred Sound Device
          -- Select START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, MULTIMEDIA, AUDIO,     
             PREFERRED DEVICE.  Select the drop down menu.  If MS Windows
     Sound System is selected, try selecting another option if
     available; i.e.: SB 16 Wave Out (220)

3. Re-profile video through Media player
          -- START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, MULTIMEDIA, MEDIA PLAYER  Click on
     DEVICE,  VIDEO FOR WINDOWS.  At LOOK IN select drive "D"
     (or cd-rom drive).  Highlight  "VIDEO1 (AVI)", press OK.  Press
     the  PLAY ARROW on the Media Player's control panel.

   Play sound file through Media player
          -- Return to media player. Click on DEVICE , SOUND.  At LOOK IN
     select drive "D" (or cd-rom drive).  Highlight  "SOUNDS1 (WAV)",
     press OK. Press the PLAY ARROW on the Media Player control panel. 


4. Color/Resolution
          -- START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, DISPLAY. Select the SETTINGS tab.
             Select a setting for 256 color and 640x480 pixels, or 800x600.
     This won't be the best settings for upper end video cards.  You
     must experiment with your options.  Diamond Stealth Video 64 VRAM
     works well with the 32 bit color.  Others will work best in 24
     bit color.  AVOID 16 BIT COLOR.

5. Screen Savers
          -- START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, DISPLAY.  Select the SCREEN
     SAVER tab, set to NONE.

6. Setup empty
          -- START, PROGRAMS, SETUP.  Move programs to a NEW folder.  Reboot.

7. New Video Drivers
          -- Check with Video card manufacturer for latest drivers. 
 
  -- To find the video card:  START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM.
     Select DEVICE MANAGER tab, click the "+" next to DISPLAY ADAPTERS. 

  -- NUMBER NINE VIDEO CARDS - Win 95 only.  If customer gets error
     reading: "Your program is making an invalid dynamic link call to
     a DLL file"  Number Nine trys to load a VFW Win 3.1 file. To fix
     edit SYSTEM.INI file drivers section.  Remove the line
     "DCI=RFMDCI"
