Memorial Day

Memorial Day, while always think about the many men and women who gave their lives for our country, always sobering to think about the men of the silent service, especially during WW 2. 52 subs with 3,505 Officers and men lost. They ensured victory, achieved in the Pacific what Germany could not accomplish in the Atlantic. I'll never forget and do my best to educate those who are unaware.

I really wish Hanks and Spielberg would make a Band of Brothers style series about US submarines, it would be fantastic. I've considered sending a copy of O Kane's books as well as Fluckey's.

We're losing dozens of our WWII submariners every day now. The ones left deserve to know that their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Many came back, but they too, signed that infitite IOU the ones who died also signed. The ones who lived also made the ultimate sacrifice. They just didn't have to pay for it. Their willingness to go into harm's way bought us our fat and happy Memorial Day of 2017. Salute!

I rarely see WW 2 sub vets anymore when I visit Drum which is expected given passage of time but sad and especially with it being a small part of the Navy. Happen to know if any of the skippers are still living?

Met a guy a couple years ago at the VA hospital in Tomah, WI who was wearing a USS SAURY SS 189 hat. I was in ASW back in the 70s, so we had a long discussion on sub hunting techniques past and present, along with ways to evade it. I had about two hours to kill before my appointment, and the time just flew by talking to this guy.

That's awesome. I've always felt fortunate to have been alive when so many WW 2 vets are, to hear the stories etc and know people who were there. My Grandfather, well Great Grandfather and his friends all had great stories.Sadly, most of them are gone and he passed not long ago at 95.
