Default Patrol strategy

Hey all

I just received a mission to patrol in the Dover Strait...

So, knowing that it's a death trap, probably as suicidal as going through the straits of Gibraltar, I'm wondering what my best strategy would be.

Because the mission only requires me to be there for 48 hours I thought that to avoid trouble perhaps I can get away with sitting in the one spot at periscope depth at all stop, and just surface to recharge at night.

But is that cheating?

What would you guys do?

TIA

I agree that some of the secondary missions assignments are very questionable and should be revised and moved to more appropriate and realistic locations. Your tactics sounds fine and IMO it's not cheating at all. You wont lose much even if you completely ignore your secondary missions objectives. After all, the only thing imported is tonnage ... If you use TWoS I've reduced patrol times in coastal waters to 24h...

Nope, Not cheating. In fact, that's exactly how the Germans fought off the East Coast USA especially in the early part of the declared war, called "The Happy Time" IIRC. Have at it, you are following some of the best.

well there's an old addage that says "alls fair in love & war"...

captain hardegen was one of the most the most successful hunters during operation paukenschlag. he bagged something like 18 ships sunk, in two patrols no less.

u -123 would lay off the coast of the eastern sea board, watch merchants shove off, wait for them to get just deep enough to sink them!

now, if that's not cheating, idk what is.

cheating is having hydrophones that can detect contacts @ full speed when surfaced, ala vanilla sh5. what the hecks the point of radar at that point?

the coastal waters leg of total Germany warns of mines. I guess that's something to consider. whether or not they're out there I have yet to find out.

patrolling ... the buttons for search patterns in sh4 were convenient, in retrospect. aces of the deep did teach me to make my own nonetheless. either a rectangle that collapses on itself in legs to the center, I always liked the "hourglass" shaped pattern.

I think the trick is to not make the legs too big where something could slip through, like say a 60 ship convoy for example. at least once a leg dip down to listen for contacts, again this isn't "sound" strategy in vanilla sh5, as the need for submerged listening is moot.

when all else fails no, its quite alright to sit there & wait, although in real life the ocean currents would've had their way with you. its a lot less diesel that's for sure.

uboats were essentially surface vessels that had the ability to dive when needed, its in their very nature to be sneaky, or cheat if you will, so cheat away!

I'm actually stuck at the first mission, the Danzig patrol and sink operation. I apparently can't meet any warship or merchant vessel during my patrolling, and in the rare case I spot some smoke on the horizon, it's already good and gone.

Any advice?

Just hunt in the area until you receive Kiel transfer message... And for the 1000th time, the only important thing in ALL SH games is tonnage, missions and objectives are just a little bit more than an eye candy...

i once snuck through the english channel to test out their defences in early 1940 and i chanced upon 2 carrier groups and sank both carries of 21k tons or so each

Sometimes its a good thing, but the english channel is really dangerous until the fall of france lol
