My name is Bruce, commander of the Armies of Nullarbor plains, General of the Kangaroo Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE prime minister, John Curtin. Owner to a murdered dingo, husband to a bored wife. And I will have my Foster, in this life or the next.

Oh dear, that pic has a myth in it there. The Thumbs down and up gesture.
Generally it was a flat palm or a closed fist.
Quote:
Contrary to popular belief, the emperor did not give a thumbs up or down for a gladiator as a signal to kill his enemy. The emperor (and only the emperor) would give an open or closed hand – if his palm was flat, it meant “spare his life”, if it was closed, it meant “kill him”. If a gladiator killed his opponent before the emperor gave his permission, the gladiator would be put on trial for murder, as only the emperor had the right to condemn a man to death. In the image above we see this myth in action.

What is historical correct?

Saw a history program about these Gladiators and in this program, a historian said that these pictures of the empire or the people stretching their hands out with the thumbs down was incorrect...the correct procedure-according to this historian-was the thumb near the throat and going from the one side to the other

Gladiators were almost like the football player of our time, cost and value great. Losing one is almost a losing Ronaldo, Messi, etc. And the "owners"/sponsors were not very please if that happened.
Of course, the condemned men were to fight to the death or be kill in it.
I am sorry, but I am talking about memory, I have a great book about Gladiators, with great explanations about the first games and so on, the first classes of it and the new ones that began to emerge.
The ones that only fought beast, the several variations of the games/fights. Have to look for it and post here the link or cover.

Fun fact about Commodus, he loved to be a gladiator, who can not like a ruler that decapitated running ostrich with arrows?
