Default Ahoy!

Neal, I'd honestly love to know what the old timer's meaning of 'bottlewasher' actually entails. I love the language! I told my girlfriend that I've fallen head over heel in love with Silent Hunter 4 and talk about it so much that she has begun to call me Skipper. Isn't that rich?

It is a bit buggy which is what kept me at bay on these games for years. Doesn't hurt that you have to almost know to look for them because the marketing is lousy. I had been big on Seawolf SSN back in the day. It had just enough complexity to really feel like I was 'doing something' and I had no idea how realistic the graphics and physics are on these games.

I have a pretty powerful computer and since it is same price, strongly considering SH5. But, alas, I read it is not well liked at all. Is that still true? Even after the modder got ahold of it? I'm a big of an eye candy junkie and if there is a mod to sweeten SH5 just right....I'd love to buy it. Will you let me know? Or I'd love to toss that out to you seasoned sailors to answer as well. I'd actually forgotten that this post is as much for your eyes as the Skipper.

I have TMO installed and love everything about it except the inability to remove the fuel restrictions. I really don't know why the modder couldn't leave that as an option. But otherwise it's awesome. I am very curious of some of the Cold War submarines but worry about mod soup. Anyone know of other good or at least interesting mods that aren't in conflict with TMO? I have one that lets you use the Balao class in 1941, which is awesome and I cannot determine any bugs. But I got RFB along with TMO and even though I deactivated TMO and then put on RFB it causes graphical artifacts as well as making the game crash frequently. Only way around that is delete and fresh install. Naturally though, this takes away my valuable time at sea! Any work arounds? I'm use the JSGME program along with TMO soon as I get it reinstalled. I'd like to know what else, other the RSRD, would be a good match??

I'd also like to mention how I got here. I was big into Seawolf SSN back in the day. Had stumbled over it dirt cheap and came to enjoy it. But the Silent Hunter games were always out of sight, out of mind and didn't have the best reputation for good reviews either. Glad I went ahead and bought this because I was THIS close to buying Fleet Battle 2, lol. Which does look fun but basically just an overblown smartphone game.

Another thing. I felt like I was taking a pretty big chance on this at ten bucks....is SH5 worth it? I really wanted that one until I read all the bad reviews on it. Has it been patched/modded sufficiently to be worth a separate purchase? The graphics do not look more than marginally better than SH4 anyhow or is this one you have to see in action on a good computer to appreciate the difference?

Another thing that this game has greatly inspired is an urge to visit the Memorial Battleship park in Mobile. I knew they had a sub, but I had only the night before played as a Gato class vessel designated no less than USS Drum. Naturally I flipped my lid the next day when I read that Drum is the very boat moored at Mobile. Definitely on my bucket list.
