Okay so you engage a captial ship that is in ship to ship combat you sink it its turrets go back to their normal position instead of the dierction they were pointing in war that would never happen everyone would be trying to get off the ship.

Perhaps the gunners are really specific about where things go, like me

I don't think the barrels would affect the list of the ship; most of the mass in the turrets would be close to the center. I think it's just a game thing; like when we are using the deck gun, and leave the station. When we go back, we must move it back on target again.

I don't know navy procedures but returning the guns to center would aid in preventing the ship from rolling (emergency flooding situation) so it seams like a smart thing to do to help save the ship so I suppose it can be possible thats what they did in RL if they had a chance to.

im sure a navy guy or someone who knows procedures will chime in soon
