Default External Torpedoes

Hi Guys, Just coming toward the end of my patrol, all torpedoes fired except an external bow one. Unfortunately the weather is terrible so can't reload and was wondering if the sea would be calmer nearer the coastline or in a natural harbour.
I'm guessing not but just thought I'd ask anyway

Obviously I realize I can wait for calmer weather, hope you understand my point, in real life I'm thinking a Uboat could maybe reload in a sheltered costal area

Nope. Unfortunately the current crop of SH games do not show the calmer wates in protected areas. There is a reason for the phrase "safe harbor", but not in SH3.

Don't be too concerned about the weather because in SH3 you can reload in any weather....the only platform you can't use are the deck gun and anti aircraft weapons.

My apologies, I was under the impression you were referring to internals.

IRL the boat wouls be submerged for calmer conditions to ease the reload procedure whenever practical.

I think close to harbors the wind speed always drops to 6m/s (still ridiculously high waves inside a u-bunker).

IIRC, it also happens close to land at least when breaking through at Gibraltar

Much as I hate to disagree with the esteemed Jimbuna, I disagree.

My experience has always been that if you enter a bay the water almost always becomes calm enough for the deck gun. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, but given the amount of horrible weather I've seen otherwise, I don't think so.

In the stock SH3 executable, you can pull in external loads in any weather, at any engine speed. It's not realistic, but you can do it. Evidently there is an executable mod that changes this so that you must have calm seas in order to pull in the external torpedoes.

Also, FYI, only steam torpedoes were stored in the external stowage. The game allows you to put electrics in there but that is not historically correct.

Maybe I'm wrong about that. I'm just used to the real world, where being in a harbor means calm waters, as in not much more than ripples. In the game I've seen ships wrecked and burning because they washed up against piers and boats inside the pens bouncing like corks. Not real.

As for the game, you can load external torpedoes in almost any weather and at almost any speed, both very unrealistic.

Hsies patch fixes the external reload in any weather bug IIRC (I can't remember not playing with it) I have found for some reason entering a friendly or neutral harbor has a weird weather change thus allowing an external reload.

See my post above. I think the game forces the wind down to 6m/s when close to a harbor.

Cheers, LGN1
