Default Heathrow Airport runways closed after plane 'fire'

Luckily the plane landed safely and nobody was killed or injured.

One possible cause being considered is a 'bird strike'.

Quote:
A British Airways (BA) plane had to return to Heathrow Airport to make an emergency landing after black smoke was seen coming from an engine.
Both runways were closed as passengers and crew were evacuated from the plane down emergency chutes.
BA said the Heathrow to Oslo service turned back after a technical fault at about 09:00 BST. Witnesses reported seeing flames coming from the engine.

Apparently the crew had practiced such an emergency every six months for over 20 years without ever needing to do it till today.

Why would both engine covers come off around the same time is a question?

And it seems to have paid off too, well done crew and all associated.

That made my ears prick up too. When you hit a bird you rarely hit just one, I guess the starboard engine ingested one while the port engine took outside damage leading to the cover popping off.

Checking updates from European flow control, it really shows you the effect of, well, anything happening to Heathrow.

Busy day for the UK ATC today, a Pakistan International Airlines aircraft is being escorted by Typhoons to Stansted after diverting from Manchester due to an 'incident'.

EDIT: Looks like the flight is PK709 from Lahore to Manchester, a 777-340. Judging by Flightradar24, it's on the ground now at Stansted.

Stansted is usually where hijacked a/c go*, or other terrorist incident. I'm just saying. . .

*Or used to be, there hasn't been one for many years in UK airspace, to my knowledge.

Wow, great link. Thanks.

Looks like Monaco GP weekend is causing trouble too.

Haha yeah, I'm very glad I'm not working today. So much of our traffic is for the London Group so any excessive holding for Heathrow tends to slow down everything else.

Only speculating in this case but bird flocks have caused multi-engine failures in the past.

Bird strike can be one of the nastiest things you can come across whilst flying:

Because it was an Airbus.

You angry?
Work for Airbus or something, or did you twist my comment into some kind of anti euro thing from some " dumb Merican"?

I love you guys, your planes just suck, sorry. Tails falling off...
(IMHO)
I am willing to bet it is the latter.

So why the angry tone, you own stock in airbus?

And I looked up a comparison between Boeing and Airbus, and Boeing has more crashes, but only due to being in service for vastly longer, with more models.

Airbus learned from Boeing, like everyone else did.

Nobody's getting nationalistic here except you.

You're wrong here. Airbus make safe aircraft.

Nationalism can be checked at the door.

Probably angry because you're making unfounded generalisations that are flat-out incorrect.

What have the faulty engines to do with Airbus? Airbus just builds the frame the Airline company chooses the engines it wishes to use on them.

Hey I am honest at least.

*gives HunterICX a big wet Bugs Bunny Kiss, and flees!*

I was mean, sorry, guys.

Edit: I continously demonstrate that I suck at life, thanks for tolerating me.
