September the 3rd, 1939. Great Britain has declared war on Nazi Germany after the invasion of Poland. Caught in the middle of all this is Oberleutnant zur See Werner Schmidt, captain of the type VIIA u-boat U-36.

As he sets out he can only think of one thing: The very pretty nurses waving him goodbye.

The band's pretty good too.

"Hey, look! A midget!"

"More nurses? Hey, being a u-boat captain has it's benefits!"

The aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin.

U-36's conning tower and emblem.

"Oh, don't mind me, XO. I was just wondering what you'd look like with an eye patch."

Anybody who's read Das Boot know's why I can't call that pattern by it's u-boat name.

If anything serious happens let Neal know.

Very nice. I actually watched Das Boot for the first time the other night. Was an outstanding movie, guess I have to read the book though to know what you meant with the one picture.

Default Patrol 2: Scapa Flow

U-36 is one of three u-boats setting out on patrol.

"Oh, hell-o nurse! Call me!"

Some Kiel landmarks.

Entering Kiel canal.

Pictures in the dining room.

"Hey! Chief! Are you sure you don't want dinner? I promise I'll turn off Grossdeustcher Rundfunk!"

"I'm sorry Kurt, but I don't think Playboy lets men pose."

Give me a second, I need to use the toilet.

"BUT THE NURSES ARE WAITING FOR ME!"

Destroyers are sighted as we arrive outside Scapa Flow.

"Please don't hurt me."

After a destroyer picks us up through their hydrophone, we're forced to dive.

We surface again, after losing the destroyers.

"But my emblem is a u-boat with teeth, not a bull!"

Blockships are sighted.

There's our target: HMS Royal Oak.

Two torpedoes are fired at the battleship.

Barrage balloons over the harbour.

Both torpedoes hit. U-36 makes to leave.

The Oak doesn't sink, so a torpedo from the stern tube is fired at it.

The ship is crippled, but not completely destroyed.

Another torpedo finishes the job.

An AMC hunts for us in vain.

As morning breaks, two destroyers sit in the perfect position to spot us. There's only one solution: dive.

Farewell, Scapa Flow!

As we leave, Poland surrenders.

We surface the following night.

The captain gets some rest.

U-36 nears Willhelmshaven.

Just a note: It would be good if you converted all pictures to jpeg before uploading them. The .png format you used this time is 10 times the file size and can take forever to load on anything less than a great connection and computer.

I'll do that, thanks for the heads up

Yes, good suggestion: the png format is only useful when you need for extra-high image detail and/or when you want to give your artwork a semi-transparent effect, but for most purposes the jpg format is just enough

On the 7/9/1939, U-36 encountered a Polish steamer.

After two torpedoes miss the steamer, the third hits.

Another torpedo is fired at the steamer to hasten her sinking. That torpedo also misses, due to a lack of data.

Later, another steamer is sunk with the deck gun, after two torpedoes fired at it miss.

Later, a small transport ship is engaged. All torpedoes fired at it miss, and a Polish destroyer arrives. U-36 engages the destroyer, using all it's remaining torpedoes. After depth-charging U-36, the destroyer withdraws. U-36 was only lightly damaged by fire from the destroyer when she was surfaced.

Later, a U-boat is encountered near Danzig.

U-36 joins the unnamed u-boat. It changes course towards Danzig.

Polish destroyers sight U-36 and the other boat. Both are forced to submerge, and U-36 takes serious damage. Schmidt, knowing that U-36 will not last long in shallow waters, orders emergency speed towards a German taskforce. The taskforce engages the Polish ships.

Several hours later, U-36 opens fire at Gotenhafen, and sinks a 6700 ton steamer.

While leaving the area, U-36 get's a better look at the Kriegsmarine taskforce.

On the 14/9/1939, U-36 returns to Kiel. And yes, the nurses were there.
