Hello!
I'm new to the forums but I've been a reader of the Subsim website for a while (mostly for reviews and sim news). I really like the silent hunter series and now due to a Steam sale I have Silent Hunter III to V. My question is which do you recommend for the most realistic sub experience (I'm assuming that mods are a must)? I'm thinking something as close to realism as possible for a computer sim like DCS A-10C/Blackshark or Falcon 4.0 but in subs. |

I've only played 4 and 5, but for the most realism, 3 is probably the best.

If you're looking for DCS style realism you probably want to go modern warfare as in the Sonalyst games - Dangerous Waters and such.
Now if you want to stick with WW2 the first question is, do you have a preference for theater / nation that you want to play?

I recommend 3 and 4 highly but mods are a must.
Grey Wolves EXpansion 3 (GWX3) is what i use for SH3 and Trigger Maru Overhauled and Run Silent, Run Deep Campaign are what I use for SH4. (TMO+RSDRC)

Normally when I see that thread title I sugget buying them all as they are so cheap, so different, so it's up to you - not anyone here.
But you've got them all already, so well done you. ![]() I'd now suggest playing them all, stock, to see which you like. Then read through the mods to see which you like the sound of, download, install, enjoy. ![]()

I recommend 3 with the Grey Wolves mod and the Real Torpedo Damage mod. Those two together are a must.

For the Pacific Theater? SH2 + 1024 Reso Mod + Pacific Aces.
For U-Boots? Dynamix's Aces of the Deep ![]() |

Ok...so I installed them all and used the Grey Wolves expansion 3 for SH 3 and used TMO+RSDRC for SH 4. It interesting how the graphics for SH3 have aged since the last time I played but messing with the nVidia graphics controls helped quite a bit. I'm liking the feel of SH 3 but SH 4 also has advanteges especially in graphics. I'm not a fan of SH 5 yet...walking through the sub is cool but it seems a bit buggy or something.
Aces of the Deep...I remember playing that on my 486 with 4 mb RAM. ![]() ![]() |
