Hi guys.
I am a failure as a man. My wife has made it known that she wants a gaming console for Christmas. Despite my repeated attempts to convert her to the inherently superior world of PC gaming, she has persisted in her desire to own a console gaming system. I like having sex, so I have no choice but to indulge her. She is mostly interested in, get this, fighting games. Yes, fighting games. She has a strong preference towards Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom and the like. My question is regarding which system to purchase. Is one inherently better than the other? Is there a looming Skyrim-esque problem regarding content with either the PS3 or XBox 360? Or should I just get the cheaper model. I know that it denigrates me to ask, but which console would be the prefered console for such games? I don't have a freaking clue. I haven't played a console fighting game since 1994 and, frankly, I feel dirty for purchasing one. Sincerely, Ashamed in Pennsylvania |

Well beeing a PC junky myself my knowledge is limited regarding consoles(only have ever owned the N64) I only know what I hear and some experience with my younger brother having owned the PS2 and PS3
he loved the PS2 but sold the PS3 after a few months...he didn't like it as he did the PS2 Also having played with the PS3 a bit while he had it, I wasn't that impressed either for something so praised. But as said beeing a PC junky I look at consoles in a different way the Xbox360 is purely focused for gaming while the PS3 offers some others things like Blu Ray player, browse the web and connect a mouse and keyboard if you want to turn it into a mini PC hooked to your Television. Library of the games are very similar so the games you have on the Xbox are also on the Playstation except for some of the exlcusives. so if it's just pure gaming plug&play wise get the Xbox360 which iirc is the cheaper of the two. But if you want to do it a bit more then I would suggest the PS3 (unless Skyrim is a game you wish to give to your wife then the PS3 is a bad choice due lots of issues reported with the PS3 version) Now I'm going to take a shower.... Do you own a HD TV?
If so do you own a Blu-ray Player? Do you mind paying a monthly premium to use the online functions of your console? In terms of Skyrim-esque problems, as it stands right now, Skyrim is the only one that has DLC problems. Skyrim handles quite well on the ps3(my girlfriend plays it constantly). It's just the lack of DLC that is appalling. Although from the sounds of it, they may be adding the DLC sometime in the future. As hunter says, their libraries are about the same, however the Ps3 has more exclusives than the 360 does.

It depends on what she likes xbox 360 has something called connect and with that there are games where you actually make fighting moves and they occur in game. She might like that.Other wise an xbox 360 is the best bet really there are tons of traditional mash button fighting games.
PS3 has about the same but its motion based games are not as in depth as the 360s with the 360 you have to really perform the move with the PS3 you dont really. Does she have friends with consoles? If so find out what they have. |

Xbox 360
I would recommend the Xbox 360. You can download music, movies, twitter, Facebook, tv shows, games, and YouTube.

We already own a Blu-Ray player and have the PCs for anything web related. Really, she just wants to mash buttons and beat stuff up. She'll probably never play another living human being, so connectivity with other players is not important either.
Thanks guys. I'll just do what I was going to do in the first place and buy whichever one is cheaper during tomorrow's Cyber Monday sales. |

![]() Other than that 360 and Ps3 are both 249.99. Depending on whether or not you want to buy games online you should try and find the one with the biggest HDD for around that price range. Typically PS3's come with 160gigs and 360's come with 250gigs. However if you get a bundled PS3 or 360(which is usually the better buy as you can get its contents for way cheaper than buying each part seperate) you can get anywhere near 300-500gig HDD's with your console. For PS3 Bundles, Uncharted 3 and Infamous(one and two) are both excellent games. The Uncharted 3 one costs 269.99 and the infamous one is 299.99. Both add 250gig HDDs to the console. Also at the 299.99 price is a Madden NFL and Assassin's Creed 3 bundle with 320gig and 500gig HDD's respectively. For 360 bundles, there is a Holiday bundle that includes Skyrim and Forza(both great games) for the price of a regular 360. Although there is no telling on what the prices will be like tomorrow. I really advise against the 4gig model of the 360 though, while it may seem like a good idea at purchase, it costs 70 dollars to upgrade your HDD if you decide too at a later point. Note that even if you don't want to purchase games, you still need to update certain games, and other games have rather large save files. The ps3 can be upgraded with any Laptop size SATA HDD, while the 360 needs you to purchase the special Microsoft HDD. If you do get the 360, you need to also buy a rechargeable battery pack. By default the controller takes 2AA batteries, but you can get the pack that plugs in the bottom for $20. The ps3 batteries are built into the controller so this isn't an issue. Also neither console comes with an HDMI cable, so you should buy one of these too. I own the $40 dollar Sony ones(which are made out of that flexible metal so they can't be damaged easily and it also came with a rather long USB cord), but any brand will do.

![]() I really don't know what to recommend, because as you know, some games only work for certain consoles (I believe that's still true, right? ![]() ![]() For me, console games are fantastic for family and group play, sitting on the sofa, relaxed and rocking the controllers with Madden Football, Tomb Raider, Motocross Racing, Splinter Cell, God of War, and some combat games. What I do not care for and have never become proficient at, is fine aiming with a thumb joystick. For serious games where I intend to hit what I'm aiming at, only a mouse and keyboard is any good. Let us know what you get, and thumbs up to your wife, you are a lucky man.

Actually, I think that you're better off waiting until May-June next year, when the Xbox 720 and PS4 will, apparently, be announced at E3.

Just adding to what's already been said - if she's interested in fighting games, I think she'll find a slightly better selection of titles on the PS3, but really the 360 has enough of them too. As a piece of hardware and when it comes to graphics, 360 is a substantially more powerful machine. In terms of exclusives and selection of titles, the PS3 has been doing really well, especially over the couple of years.
I don't own either, but I've had substantial "stick time" with both systems while staying with friends over the last few years, and both really do have good points and a fair share of features that are on par with each other. To be honest, I'm not sure which I'd take over the other. I think if I were to have only one gaming/media machine to myself, I'd probably choose the 360; but with a gaming PC available, I'd probably pick the PS3 just for the exclusive titles. In the end, I think you won't go wrong either way - so yep, go and see which one is a better deal tomorrow! |

![]() Besides, with both the 360 and PS3 having dropped in price over the last year, I would not expect any further price drops on them after the next-gen announcements. |
