Convoys

Ive been palying for a while now but I have just run into my first convoy.

I came in ahead of the convoy, destroyed the lead and only escort, a corvette with a lucky torpedo shot. Then i slipped into the convoys lines with the plan to ID the ships because the stormy weather stopped me from commiting an underwater attack and I can't go to town with the deck gun. I have IDed a coastal frieghter, a C2 cargo and a T2 tanker.

But I didn't aline myself properly and now I am a few metres away from the tanker, just underwater.
This being my first convoy attack I do not know the procedure. My main question is how am i doing so far?
P.S Im using vannila i can't find a GWX install I can use

Nice job taking out the escort. here are the main rules for attacking a convoy:
1. Always attack on the surface, at night.
2. If you run into a convoy at day, Shadow it.

Good job, TwoGamers!
I myself don't prefer attacking the escorts no matter how many there are. I suggest you conduct a surface attack (it's not quite advantageous attacking underwater because of poor speed and mobility) after sunset and aim for the most valuable targets such as tankers and large merchant first. If they're down, start attacking the small merchants as long as you've eels in the tubes or an escort spots you. Keep pushing till sunrise. If you've a damaged ship lagged behind the convoy finish her with the deck gun then get back to pursue the convoy.
I hope I could help!
P.S. here is where you can download GWX:

I didn't really attack it I hadn't picked up the convoy on hydrophone yet. I had dived under and when i put my periscope up I saw the corvette. I was really close because my watch crew was sleeping on the job or something, and so I just put in the AOB and clicked the tick to lock it in and fired tube 1. Got a lucky hit. I was going to go on a surface attack but the merchants were close and so I didn't want to get seen. To T3 tankers at the back but both american

Don't worry!
I once sank an American Battleship in Silent Hunter 5!

Is the coastal freighter and the C2 still in a few convoy rows further back, or have they passed you already? If the latter, then move out of the convoy and reposition for the next attack. But you can make use of the time to investigate the composition, and layout of the convoy.

If they haven't passed you, then turn perpendicular to the course of the convoy. Set the convoy speed in the TDC panel. (probably the same as the leading escort) Set the AOB arrow to the direction they pass to in the view. 90 degrees, either to the left or right. Then turn the periscope until the gyro angle readout is 0. Then wait until that C2 or coastal freighter passes the periscope line. Then you fire the torpedos. Do this one row at a time. Reposition after every row!

You can hit multiple ships in the same row this way. Just wait for the furthest one to pass the line, then fire. Wait for the nearer ones to pass the line and fire the next torpedoes. Some may overlap when they get near to the periscope line. Whichever one is visible on the line will get the torpedo first. (Unless the torpedo is set to deep for the nearer one) When the last for the row has been fired, GET OUT FAST!

Errrrrr no. This will get you killed very quickly if you stick to these rules. Just wait for radar to show up and see how well you do with these.

As to OP I'm assuming it's still early in the war, as there was only one escort. Save your torpedos! As the escorts won't respawn, id surface just outside the convoy and shadow them very very tightly until the weather clears up till you can deck gun them down. If you do encounter enemy ASW, you'll have enough time to dive and evade quickly. I doubt they'll ever get a fix on you. And by beIng on the surface, the convoy will be zigzagging, reducing its speed along its course, reducing the chances of entering enemy air patrol zones, or despawning.

There is a working link to GWX above my sig.

Here is a link to the GWX manual which has a section on attacking convoys:

I prefer sneaking under the forward escort and then make a fast, submerged attack on three good targets form the central lines of the convoy (two with forward tubes, one with the aft). Then usually I have to dive deep in order to evade the ASW units -- but early in the war they are dumb enough. If I had sunk all three targets, i reload and restart the attack. Else I spend some time sinking the stragglers, then I make a pretty circle around the convoy and start again.

Ah no Im in a VIIB, but the convoy started zig-zagging and speeding up after i launched the torpedos, so I got no kills. On my way back to base an aircraft got a hit on my bow dive planes, then another one finished me of with a hit to the engines.

You have to be more agressive especially since you're new and, like most young kaleuns, you probably have throat problems!

If you want the Ritterkreuz you have to be ready to take risks!

Be harsh,

Woolfman
