Default I think my neighbour needs help...

Unusual situation here. I frequently hear my neighbour - a fifty-something single male - shouting at night. It usually happens around 1 or 2 AM. He wakes up (I assume) and starts shouting "F*ck! F*cking c*nt! F*cking moron! You f*cking moron/c*nt" over and over. The lights come on within a couple of minutes (that's why I assume he was asleep) and the shouting continues for a while, then dies down. Thing is, he lives alone. He works a job, but never has any visitors. I'm pretty sure he's shouting at himself, or perhaps at the memory of someone he knew. Either way, he clearly has issues.

I'd like to help, but knocking on his door and saying "hi, I live downstairs and think you should see a doctor" doesn't seem like a good way of going about it. I could just leave it and do nothing, but there's so much venom in his voice, the guy sounds to me like he's a hair-width away from topping himself, or worse. Should I do anything, and if so, what?

Either visit the social-psychiatrist service (or however it is called in your place) if they run a public office, tell them in more detail what'S happening and then see what they say.

Or meet the police and ask them for advise, say that you are worried, and they should get in the social-psychiatrist service.

Or call the police at night when it happens, saying they should bring the social-psychiatrist service with them.

Tough call mate, it depends on how much of a good samaritan you are prepared to be.
Have you ever spoken to him before? kinda depends on how approachable / stable he is, if he can hold down a job he cant be that far gone.

Youre right in that you cant just tell him to get help -then wash your hands of it. |If you speak to him directly, you might be getting your self more involved than you would like.

But if you're ok with that then the best you can do is be honest and polite, casually tell him you have heard his yelling at night and offer him friendly ear if he wants to talk about it, (but act like its not a big deal) and thats it.
He'll proabably shut down, or go in to denial, he might even take offense and tell you its none of your busniness....(which is fair enough) but then at least you can say you tried.

Otherwise the only 'arms-length approach' is notify the authorities, they might send a social worker and a doctor to speak to him, but he would still have to accept their help on volentary basis, they cannot force him to do anything.

The police themselves will not intervene unless you report a 'noise disturbance' I wouldnt do this just yet - But the police might be a good first port of call just to get some advice.

sounds to me like he has that desease that makes people blurt out curse words uncontrolably at times.

he obviously doesnt do it all the time so he must be on medication for it and my guess is the medicine wheres off around that time while hes asleep and he wakes to take his medicine to go back to sleep.

he may not even realise hes doing it in which case telling him can help him inform his doctor to adjust his medication.

just tell him you heard some hollering from his place and ask if he was ok, that way its up to him if he tells you anything or not.

either way he gets the message that he is having "episodes" in his sleep

Tourette's syndrome you mean? Could be.I would say if this guy seems fine in every other way it could be that he has Tourette's You say he lives alone that does in and of its self mean too much some people tend to be loners if he seems to have a regular work schedule he must not be displayed odd behaviors at work and if he goes to work regularly that means he has some control over himself.Without knowing much about him you cant say say for sure that he has issues like I said maybe he has Tourette syndrome or maybe he plays PC games late into the night and you are hearing his fit when he dies or something some folks will sit in front of a PC with little to no lighting.

I am pretty sure that people know that they have Tourette's they just cant control the sounds or little twitches.I have a cousin that has it and he will sometimes just say some random curse word or out of place word usually he says sorry afterwords.

The guy might also suffer from night terrors and he may be yelling in his sleep.

Go to your council they will sort it out. Years ago I had a pain in the rear end of a neighbour who was fined for his noise, once he knew I was not going to take his tripe he moved out not long after being fined.

The laws today I even more tougher on rat bags who just want to make everyone else suffer for their BS.

Go knock on his door ask politely to keep the noise down...
If say tells you to get stuffed or threatens you with violence then do as STEED says and go and see your local council.

Hope you get it sorted either way.

He's a Warcraft gamer and his healer just pulled aggro off the tank at the end of their nightly raid.

If he is having an "episode" - do NOT interject yourself. Catch him during the day sometime and say "hey man, I've been noticing a lot of noise about 2 AM. Everything ok? Sounds like your fussing at some chick and we don't want things to get ugly, so chill a little. If you need to take a walk or something, it might be best."

Yes, he may not have anyone there. Then again, he could be using the services of a local "entertainer". He could have a serious problem. This way, your not "judging", but putting him on notice that its been noticed. That way he can identify it as an issue and work on it or get it addressed.

Since he is stable at other times - it sounds like he is trying to keep himself "straight" - and if so a friendly convo on it is enough to help him do so. If it continues, then you go from there. But don't involved others until you give him the chance to sort it out first.

As far as I know, OLC isn't a pimp from a '70s movie.

Interesting... this was OLC's last post, according to his profile.

I wonder if he got into serious trouble with his neighbor, hope he's ok.

That is indeed interesting and also a bit of a worry. But note that his last 'activity' is recorded as 12th February 2013. But then it was at 1.25 am. Makes you wonder whether his neighbour was still at it and he went round there... did any of you guys know him?

Maybe he was just upset about the infraction and left Subsim. Wouldn't be the first IIRC.
