Default Dumb question......

Its a dumb question but I'm going to ask it anyway for clarification.......

Is the offset angle dial in SH4 TDC equivalent to SH3's spread angle option for the torpedos??? Or is there no actual way to control a torpedo spread in SH4?? I just notice all my torpedos seem to impact in the same location one after another, when they hit that is

Can someone clarify please?

I've never played SH3, but yes, I use the "Offset Angle" adjustment for that very thing.

Yes, as Wernher said it will allow you to spread your torps, but the dial must be set for each torpedo just before you fire it. In other words, if you set the dial to 2 degrees left, they will all go to the same spot 2 deg. left. You have to change the dial for each torp; 1 right, 0, 1 left, 2 left, etc. At least that is the way it works in RFB.

Ahhh right, that might account for why I missed with 4 torps last night, as they all veered off and went WAY ahead of the target because of the angle I had set, I had external view off, but I could see straight away from the wakes in the direction they were heading they were all going to be misses.

Btw, playing with external view off adds a whole new dimension to playing SH4

I think I'm going to give up trying to set individual angles for my torpedo spreads.....ever since I've started altering the offset angle for each shot.....every torpedo misses!!

Before though, whenever I would set say 3 degrees right on the dial, and then fire off my torps with this angle setting they would all still hit.....albeit the same spot on the target annoyingly.

With changing offset angles for each shot, the torpedos all seem to miss by a wide margin, some even flying off in the wrong direction despite the fact I KNOW my calculations are right. I always input my bearing and range last, turn on the PK and let my torps fly!!

Are you meant to resend the bearing in the TDC for before EVERY torpedo shoot to update the new angles?? Because to be honest if that's the case, I won't bother!!

You are opening the tube doors (pressing the Q button) before aligning and firing right?

You shouldn't need to send the bearing or other data between torps; at most a spread should only take 30 or 40 sec., the firing data should not become stale in that space of time. You might try a few practice missions with map contacts on so you can better see what is going on. Is it possible your data was off?

The necessity to set the offset angle for each torpedo, the moment just before you launch it, is very annoying. In RL, the spread angle would already have been calculated before the first torp was launched. Having to move the little dials when you are in a hurry, and trying to time your shots, is certainly not ideal. As I recall, someone asked for this to be changed when RFB came out. Maybe someone knows how it can be fixed?

I am assuming you are using RFB. Perhaps it is different with other mods.

The proper way to input data to the TDC is this.
First turn on the PK.
Second input speed and send to TDC.
Third input AoB and send to TDC.
Fourth bearing/range and send to TDC, Double click the send button here.
This will improve your shooting.

The gyro angle offset dial needs to be set for each torpedo, it doesn't set a spread. To use this lock on the target, that is middle of target (mot).
Set your first torpedo -1 or 2° Next mot or zero and third + 1 or 2°.
You can shoot stern, mot and bow this way.
Gyro offset is very range dependent so for close shooting 3° will work, mid range 2° and longer ranges may require as little as 0.5°.
It's something you just have to play with to get it right. They call it experience.

A more accurate way to do this is to wait till the target is almost at your firing point (bearing 350° to 010°) and then unlock the PK and move the periscope a few degrees, just ahead of the bow and click the send range/bearing to TDC.
Next fire when the part of the ship you want to hit crosses the wire.
You shoot bow, mot and stern. Gotta' be fast and it does take some experience but once you get it, very accurate.
I think is was Armistead that first posted this method.
