Default They Borked my Home Town

I decided to take a cruise and see what my home town of Halifax looked like in the game and what targets there were.

For what was an extremely important naval base in the war, the developers sure really made a mess of it....putting it on what is basically a nearly uninhabited island.

Of course, this is really upsetting. I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to mod it someday.

For comparison, here is a map of modern Halifax where I have added locations of harbour defences and other points of interest for the time period.

That is some interesting information. I didn't know.
Well, don't feel bad... almost all ports were poorly represented on SH3... right now, I can only think of Wilhelmshaven.
I am pretty sure some skilful modders would be able to do something about it.

If you want detailed ports get Wilhelmshaven, St.Nazaire and Schleuse(SP) mod. It ads a ton of stuff even animated locks I also recommend WAC animated sub pens and ace's super pens.

My guess is that trying to have AI ships navigate those narrows would have been difficult.

But then again, they the nearest port to me, Galveston, named "Galverston" in the stock game. Irked me like nobody's business. Here's me kvetching about it in 2006.

It doesn't work on Stock, and I'm not interested in detailed ports or extras, or total historical accuracy, only a reasonable representation of their layout.

I can see that. Kind of iks me too. Quite a number of Canadian ships were refitted in Galveston during the war.

I know inGWX The convoy rally area is modeled. If they travel the narrows, I know not.

Pretty much every harbor in SH3 is wrong, and even the ones 'fixed' in the St Naz mod are still wrong; they just look a lot better. SH5 goes a long way. Here is their version of Halifax:

The grey 'X's represent ships until you zoom in on them.

Here is Halifax in GWX and the convoy staging area further inland.

I think his problem was with the docks on the island and the ships parked there. Looking at his map I can see why he'd complain. Not GWX's fault of course, since the original dock is there in the stock game.

Agreed....my post was centered on the fact that the convoy staging area is populated as per RL.

That is more like what I was expecting.

Only Lawlor Island (the island just east of McNabs Island on my map) is missing. I guess it still isn't shallow at the Eastern Passage as well. Drakes Gut, the area between the two islands, is only about 9 feet deep. Look up CSS Tallahassee, I'm still trying to figure out how that was done.

That is correct. I'm not really complaining, I'm just irritated that the developers couldn't look at a map. I wasn't expecting an exact relica of Halifax's facilities, just a reasonable representation, but to put the the whole kit and kaboodle on McNabs Island is...well, just wrong.

I guess the guys who worked on SH5 did look at a map. Wish my rig could play the game now that the DRM is gone.

PS. Query: Does SH5 have searchlights for harbour defenses? Just wondering, because Halifax had a bunch of them.

As I've said, I grind my teeth at Kiel and Wilhelmshaven. They really have pretty much nothing to do with the real harbors. An example:

The Real Kiel:

The SH3 Kiel:

SH4 is the same. Their Midway has lighthouses and a bay deep enough for aircraft carriers. The reality was that even destroyers couldn't get in there. The docks were outside the harbor.

Well, after all the complaints they recieved...

Same here. I tried running it, but I'll just have to wait to play it in earnest.

That, I didn't get to find out. Someone else will have to answer that.
