Default It is with great regret that I announce the loss of U-13.

With a career spanning from 08/01/1939 to 03/05/1941, this gallant type IID and it's brave crew led by the fearless Franz Koch took the war to the enemy with 19 patrols for a total merchant tonnage of 279,845.

This remarkable boat also sank the HMS Nelson, HMS Southhampton and HMS Rodney.

After some idiot in command sent the coastal boat to a patrol in the middle of the Atlantic, u-13 docked at the supply ship Corrientes. During the return trip to Lorient Franz detoured to the Gibralter strait with an eye to hunting merchants as they pass through. After sinking an Ore Carrier, a Medium Cargo, a Small Freighter and a Tramp Steamer the sounds of a convoy leaving Gibralter were heard. Franz Koch expertly pounced on the convoy from a perfect position, but unfortunately the one remaining torpedo was a bubbler, and was spotted on the surface. A Large Merchant was missed, but a Medium Cargo was hit. Diving to a depth of 75 meters U-13 was soon set upon by two destroyers and two armed trawlers. Being unable to escape Franz ordered ahead flank towards the convoy in an attempt to throw the hunters off the trail in the merchant chaos. Unfortunately the destroyers were too good, and U-13 took a direct depth charge run that destroyed the front batteries and caused major flooding throughout the ship. Despite the valiant efforts of the crew to repair and pump out the water, the U-13 was unable to maintain it's depth, and sank deeper into the cold waters of the Gibralter Strait. At about 160 meters the boat was destroyed by pressure. All hands were lost.

DID.

L.z.S Hoffman and the crew of U-345 deeply regret the loss of U-13 and it's crew. God Bless and they will not be forgotten.

I thank you all for your condolences. It is indeed a bittersweet moment.

U-13 under my command exceeded the operational life of the real U-13, which was lost after depth charging 31st May 1940.

Unfortunately all the crew of the real U-13 survived, while all of mine perished.

Let this be a lesson to all: Never underestimate the escorts.

A sad loss indeed. Has happened to me frequently. I am amazed that you managed to find so many ships to sink (ref. my earlier post Is it just me?

I have SH3Contacts wound up almost to 100% and still no ships; well, that's not strictly accurate. First time out there are contact reports appearing on the navmap and I have a great time chasing them down. Then I save the career and when I come back to it I never see another ship.

It has got to be so boringly predictable that I now no longer bother playing saved careers but just play the one session 'till I have to quit or I go for the single missions. It takes a considerable amount of fun out of the game.

Are you running GWX? And if so, have you tried the SpySat mod?

Patience, Grasshopper.

Very rarely do the contact reports go my way. They're usually going in the wrong direction, the wrong speed, or they're so far away that a few degrees off course means I miss them altogether.

I play the waiting game: pick a likely spot and let the merchants come to me.

BF 13 is a favorite of mine. Many ships / convoys travelling northeast or south west into / out of the English Channel.

There's another prime location near the mouth of the channel between Ireland and Scotland.

Just outside the straits of gibralter was working out excellently for me until I got to cocky and went in.

You also need to be prepared to travel long distances as periscope depth. You'll hear the merchant traffic well before they're in sight. They've been times in my IID that I've exhausted my torps before I've even reached my patrol point.

What campaign file do you have enabled and what area of operations are you in?

The captain and crew of U-96 express belated condolences to the loss of U-13. Another poor decision from BdU sends another ace to an early demise. No one should have ordered an Einbaum near Gibraltar.
