Why would an American sailor get a morale boost from a rewritten perversion of a British song?

Here's what they really listened to.

Battle Hymn all the way!

Sometime I serve "Sunrise"...

Usually makes the boat very quiet for a very long time...

This would be the appropriate song to improve morale of a US Navy vessel.

Personally .... I have my crew [U-51] do this on the deck after a successful attack [preferably in full view of enemy]. Seems to do the trick

**Edit** Keep in mind they are in uniform, two lines facing, on deck

Not quite, at least not at first. The tune is Garryowen, a late 18th Century Irish drinking song adopted first by the British 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers and only much later by the US 7th Cavalry.
