It is 1942 in my current campaign, and for the last 8 months I have only had opportunity to use the deck gun 3-4 times, due to weather, increased number of escorts, and armed merchants. Like K-61, I have been considering the removal of my deck gun. (Using SH3 Commander.) I assume that SH3 Commander does not allow you to replace the gun once removed, and that you can purchase another one in-game if you change your mind? I'm guessing that there is no performance gain through the removal of said gun.
I could brave it and go gun-happy, but have been using this campaign as a training ground to learn tactics and the proper level of aggression/caution to get one out alive. I plan to go dead is dead in my next campaign, and so this learning opportunity has been invaluable. More than likely, I'll hold onto the gun until near 1943, and pretend that the extra space the ammo was taking is getting used for food, etc... |

Don't know mate it's you're choice. I'm in 42 now and I still used my gun a few times. (like parking behind a stopped freighter when he only has a gun on his front and finishing him off, or what I did in my last patrol - hitting the damn Liberty freighter with my cannon, although liberty was fully armed, because I lacked the fuel to make another pass and sink it properly with torpedoes)
If I see it myself that I don't really need it I will remove it but for now I take all I can bring with me to patrols. Who knows maybe I'll find a sailing boat I hate ![]() |

Either way, I want to wait a another 8-9 months before I make a final decision. Would be nice to know if one can get the gun back though. |

Well as you said there's no performance gain if you remove the deck gun, but as far as I know there's no performance penalty for keeping it, so unless you want to play it 100% historical I'd say leave it on there

Here's an article about the guns http://uboat.net/technical/guns.htm
In RL the guns were removed from almost all boats in 1943. As ediko said it's your choice. It's harder and harder to sink ships with the deck gun as the war goes on.In a training career you could keep it,in DiD it's not worth it. |

I've never been able to use the DG after my first visit to the States so its goes by Jun42. I was thinking about a no DG from the start of the war just trying something out different for a change.
