Default ships in distress

Hi all...

I noticed that in bad weather (wind speed 12 - 15), surface ships usually have problems, real big ones.

In my actual career I have finished off 2 ASW trawlers and 1 V&W DD that were stationary. One of the ASW was in fire and the DD was listing like the Titanic -which caused me to miss one torpedo that passed ABOVE the deck!). Every one of them produced the whining noise of the bulkeads collapsing.

I finish them off, as they are an easy kill, but I get the feeling of cheating.

Do you know if this is a sh3 issue? Has it been adressed by a mod?

Was it at all possible in real life to make a torpedo attack (even below surface) in this weather?

Thx!

Tramp steamers are another class of ship that suffers in poor weather conditions. I am currently stalking a convoy where a tramp steamer has dropped out of formation and is now lagging behind the main convoy. This happened in real life and u-boats often picked off these stragglers with ease. As for successfully attacking submerged in very rough (storm) sea conditions in real life, it most probably would be near on impossible. Even surfaced attacks would be very difficult.

Yes, you're right... although I never saw before a DD caught like that in a storm (wind speed 15), unable to sail away.

I think I ran across a task force of 3 destroyers (at least that is what I heard), 1 was sailing ok, 1 was lagging but its engines worked, and the last one was stationary with its bow sunken like the Titanic.

Absolutely true. When the weather was bad enough whole convoys would 'Heave To' - turn into the wind and stop, only keeping enough speed to maintain headway. They could do this precisely because they knew the u-boats couldn't attack in those conditions.

Grumpf... so I am caught between my permastorms, the impossibility to sink a single ship and reality. Oh boy. Well, it's just a game, uh?

I wish I came across these stricken vessels! Haven't experienced this yet myself but look forward to the easy pickings when I do...

As I sail around with a Type II, I usually go for the British East Coast, where there's plenty of coastal vessels. With bad weather you'll eventually will come across ships in distress.

I found the DD east of the Shetlands. Oh, and in the gap between the Orkney and the Shetlands, where there's also plenty of traffic...

I notice it more in Winter months if I have SH3 Commanders 'Seasonal Waves' option enabled, and it's a particularly rough one.

I found several ship in similar cases, one of which was a medium cargo docked at Calais and the rough waves seems to have pushed it to the side which made the metal rubbing noise, another ship was in the same situation only it was on fire.

Like in reality, as Captain Neme has mentioned, ship at sea or dock suffer in bad weather.

Just a game??!!??!! How dare you say that here!? Harrumph!

Well, now that that's out of my system...

There are a lot of things that could have been better in the game. Some they didn't have time for, some they just got wrong, but in cases like this I think they just didn't know. There are a lot of things that some of us discover by accident that all the research on the part of the developers just won't turn up. I wish it wasn't so.

I've seen 'Flower' class corvettes foundering and burning in bad weather, because smaller ships are more affected in the game. The reality was that even though it was said that they would "roll on wet grass", the 'Flowers' were actually better in heavy seas than the larger destroyers, since their short hulls would ride over waves that larger, sleeker ships would try to plow through.

@ Vendor

Yes, I notice the difference.

In winter months, when wind speed is at it's maximum, it really feels as if you are battling through heavy waves, with the boat really pitching about violently.
Try it for a patrol during the winter and see if you like it.

One of the negatives of the SH3 game engine is how it displays damage....in the case of storm damage/floundering, fires can be seen similar to that you would only usually expect as a result of shellfire.
