Default Smart ass escorts .

Ok well i just started my career again and am currently sitting at 50mts as i type (not me ,my sub). I lost contact with the damn task force that just turned up out of the blue . Spotted by planes i guess in the western approaches . No contact the hydrophone operator says . I go to priscope depth and do a quick scan but must have missed the destroyer sitting with the engines off in the distance . I surface and soon after the water explodes near me . First thing i do is look up in the sky , and no bugger it . I go to the flak and the explosions are close but no planes . Just then i spot a destroyer and i tell you i fumbled trying to get back down the hatch so i could dive . Well now i am waiting it out with hull at 55% . I just want to get back to port but the smart ass brits wont let me .

I had a similar experience. Whacked two troop ships and the escorts were good - DC'd me for an hour. It was very early in career (no promotion points yet for crew) and I finally got away, or so I thought, by setting depth to 112 meters (which meant that the sub actually held at 174) running minimum ahead silent. By experimentation, I had found before that going to 180 meters started causing hull damage. Again, this with totally nube crew. It really was intense!

Just like you, no noise on the phone. I went to periscope after two hours down there "in the clear," did not do a sufficient sweep with the scope and surfaced. Three escorts were up there, spread out in a big triangle, each about 7000 meters away (I think). I was soon spotted by two of them and the same horrific undersea drama started all over again, this time with 8% hull damage.

If only the AI were like this going forward. I am now around May 1941 and in all that time I have never again seen anything resembling competent escorts. Either the AI needs vast improvement or I have been very lucky.

What (if any) mods are you guys using?

I've not had any experiences like that as of yet, but I guess I'm still in the 'happy times' - Is it wrong that I want the Jesus depth charged out of me?

Well, I'm in happy times too, and for me the escorts are too stupids. Well, I sunk 5 ships yesterday in a convoy that I find and it was too easy to evade warships. Any deep charge was shoot against my sub...
I'm playing in hard mode so I want to ask you if there is a mod or something to make more challenge in reference to the destroyers, or maybe I shoud wait for 1942 to find hard enemies...

(sorry, my english sucks...)

I'm using Killer AI mod at the moment, it seems rather good, destroyers definately do come after me more, however they still wayy miss the mark when trying to DC me but its been much better than stock, I even got damaged once!!!

I had only installed a couple of environmental mods to make the sky prettier. Everything else bone stock. I was thrilled because I thought that AI was going to be great, but I never saw "intelligence" again. I am beginning to think that it was just a fluke.

In my growing frustration I have been experimenting with some AI mods but without much success. Closest was the infamous U-Boat Killer AI Mod v1.02, but for me that was a bit on the other side of unrealistic as it makes the escorts hear great even in rough seas, eliminates any effect of thermal layer, etc. But if you want the bejesus DC'd out of you, it serves the purpose well!

Just me, but I do not want the Brits to ALWAYS have super abilities any more than to be totally stupid. Ideally:

1. It would be nice if the hunter killer groups were particularly talented (that would make sense). As it is now I pop one of the group just for grins if I am bored and have an electric loaded, with no fear of reprisal whatsoever.

2. You could be about 80% sure that a warship task force would have sharp escorts, it would be very hard to get close, and if you managed to destroy a capital ship they would react, well, as they should. If they locate you, a couple would stay back to plaster you until you lose them or until hell freezes over, whichever comes first.

3. With convoys you just never could tell. Maybe this time they are all green - maybe this time some of them really know what they are doing. Maybe the lead DD is an ace and the rest not. Maybe they all have orders to keep going, or maybe one or two have the discretion to stay on you for a while. That sort of thing.

4. All the above GREATLY affected by environmental conditions just like real. For example, trying to get close to a warship task force on a clear day with dead calm seas should be extremely hazardous if not downright suicidal.

99.5% of the sim's appeal is in dealing with the enemy. When the AI lacks variety, surprise and "intelligence" of any sort, SH gets boring fast. Any suggestions for modifications would be greatly appreciated!
