Scared of the Hedgehog

Hi all. I was thinking back to a year or so ago when i last played SH3 before coming back to it recently. Around the period of 1942-43 I was more often than not killed by a new weapon developed by the Royal Navy that scared the begezus out of me every time. It was the Hedgehog anti submarine weapon. Right now i'm only at Dec 1940, so right now i can breath easy.

Has anyone else come across this recently in their campaigns and how does it make you feel?

I hate the Hedgehog and I haven't even run into it yet since it's Q1 1941 in my current career.

What's the best defense against Hedgehog other than to not have it fired at you? There has to be some way to deal with it, even if the Germans back then wouldn't have known it.

The only defense I can think of would be constant changing of course when being pursued. Since it is a contact weapon, avoid contact if possible.
Is there a limit in the game on reloads and time to reload of the weapon, cause that was a weak spot with it.
It was complicated, "buggy", and took time to reload.

Your best defence (if you identify an escort armed as such and heading your way) is to put it to the top of your list of priorities, targetwise and take it out.

None of my careers last long enough to encounter hedgehogs; either from boredom or sheer ineptitude on my part. But my current campaign is looking sweet - 18 patrols - just might make it past the early years this time. *crosses fingers*

Its really difficult to escape from those destroyers throwing hedgehogs and depth charges at the same time. Furthermore, there will always be another destroyer (at least) equipped with this weapon looking for you. The psychotic persistence with which the destroyers keep searching for me, the constant ping-sound, the efficiency of these weapons, the tension during the attack run of a destroyer and the agony during the waiting of the next attack run usually make me think that i did really bad attacking that convoy!

I know its only a game but it is this very game that frequently puts me under stress. This is why i decided to stop positioning myself among the convoy columns and make long shots instead ; '43 onwards, that is. Who cares about tonnage? Its '43 and its evident that the allies are going to win. Hit (if you can) and run (metaphorically speaking since one of the things you can't grant to Uboats is high underwater speed - relative to surface boats speed). And deep, deep as much as you can.

I agree. At this point I seek only unescorted vessels and with a sharp eye to the sky. No sense being a dead war hero. Live to fight another day.

I also agree that in '43 or so the focus has to shift away from sinking ships and more toward trying to help my crew (an me) survive the war. It is clear the Ubootwaffe can no longer change the outcome of the war. The boats keep getting sent out to tie down allied forces that would otherwise be used against the homeland, so just being out there and forcing the allies to respond is doing ones duty. (Don't know if the crews of the time understood that, but having read Donitz's memoirs, it's clear that was the goal).

Hello Redbear,

Could you tell me the title of this book, please?
