Supposedly it will reduce chance of detection by 10%.

Ive never noticed much difference in game, but hey take whatever advantage you can get, if it were only a 1% change id take it!

I think in real life it actually caused more problems than it solved since the rubber coating would start to peel off and end up causing more noise...

For the sake of 1000 renown and the late period it becomes available by then you should have plenty of renown).....I would have thought it was worth the expense.

Worth the expense if it helps you avoid getting sunk just once. It won't make you invisible, and you still have to minimize your profile when they are searching for you, but it give you a little bit of extra room to avoid them
