Default Why is voice command unpopular?

Hi All,

Lack of forum search hits on voice command tells me it's not used.

Is it because 50% of the commands are sub menus that don't have keyboard mappings?

I would rather use a voice command utility that I can move to other sims.

All voice utilities are from the windows 98 era?

Welcome Aboard Herr Kaluen!!

Actually last VC I knew of was AoD (Aces of the Deep) circa 95ish and was for Windows 95. And it never worked right..for me anyways.

I think it was available in Bridge Commander, for you fellow Star Trek fans, in about 2000-2001. Never tried it, myself, so who knows how well it worked? You'd think it'd be pretty involving. Verbally commanding, "ahead flank" or "warp factor eight," and having it work, would be...all kinds of awesome.

Think of VC on your cellphone...

"Call Debbie"

"Did you say Call Dorothy?"

Sooo..

"Surface!"

"Did you say Dive!"

I don't know. If they had a training part, where you would have to say each command one by one so it recognizes your voice, it would actually work.
Just like with the Vista program, that lets you use your voice to do certain things, or Rosetta stone.

I think its more along the lines of, because its had a bad history, people seem to shy away from it.

Plus, most people dont want to look like a dork talking to the computer. lol

I used to be quite enthusiastic about Game Commander, a voice app that you can "train" -- and I used it to run SH3 with German commands. Eventually I felt it was more trouble than it was worth. It required that I use the headset instead of my speakers, because of the constant risk of the crew voices triggering commands (even loud sound effects could be interpreted as commands!)

Mach's gut,
Wayne

i have used "shoot" with some fairly high degree of success in the past... however i have found that it is a lot faster for me to just click the icons and speed telegraph and push keyboard keys.

Thanks for the input.

I'll avoid it due to complexity and weird factor when discussing with friends.

From "40 year old virgin" reference.
You know how I know your gay? When you set up voice command and talk to your games?????

Salute!

I have used voice commands very effectively with flight combat sims where I fly strictly in-cockpit. If you "push to talk" or key the mic you will get excellent response over an 'open mic'. Yes, it adds to the immersion and for hard to find keys it if fantastic IMHO. It works well in MP with select commands. Whatever floats your boat!

thats where i have had the most success with voice command stuff.

I had a lot of custom voice commands set up for my combat flight simulator, and i almost never had to repeat my commands.

it was a lot of fun saying something like "Red Section Attack the Bombers." and those wingmen would respond and peel off and go to work. then "Blue Section Attack Fighters." and they would peel off and go after the fighters. just for example.

that way you dont have to go looking for keyboard combination mid fight because some of those air battles can be fast paced - you never have to go "heads down"

I use my own customized 'version' of SH3Speech, and I love it. There is a thread for it somewhere on the forum (maybe the mods forum). I could never get the commands that required movement of the mouse to work properly, so I just eliminated all those commands. The ones that control key strokes work great. Using SetKeys, I was able to add a few more to my taste. Mind you, it does take some time to figure out how to successfully modify the program commands, and to get the Microsoft speech recognition engine up and running, and to train the speech recognition to recognize your commands, but it's well worth it. I'd say I can control 80 - 90% of the normal routine on the boat with my voice.

Technically of course, this is a request not a command. Note the use of the words "Will you..." I have tried omitting those words altogether and employing a movie-style WWII German officer tone of voice, which has had the effect of reducing me to preparing my own meals all damn week and an almost total curtailment of bedroom activity (unless you count changing the sheets & pillow-cases ) At least I am now experiencing to the full the joys of life á la U-Boot crews on patrol!
