Default I've finally done it!!! Sunk my FIRST Battleship!!!!

Since owning this game from its release day, I have only once before come close to torpedoing a battleship. That attack failed because rough seas washed over my boats tower and revealed my position to the Task Force.

I feel rather pleased with myself, even though it was what you might call a "gamey" kill. I ran into a convoy in pitch of night, and slipped in past the escorts getting in among the first ranks of ships. In GWX3 on a dark night you can see absolutely nothing, zero zilch. I couldn't see anything, and the only reason I found a battleship (HMS Nelson to be exact) among this convoy, was the notepad when I was scanning the scope round said "Battleship" when my crosshairs found it.

"Battleship"....that's good enough for me. Using the hydrophones and map, I created a target solution and fired from 1700mtrs. It was at first a disheartening moment. The first torpedo missed and about 10 seconds later the 2nd hit, then a few seconds more after the 3rd hit, then a few seconds more, the 4th hit. 3 out of 4 aint bad.

Now all I had to do was wait. I knew I'd hit my battleship but didn't know if it was sinking. After using the external cam, I found it only by its engine noises, and from the shadows being cast around by the other ships searchlights, could see it was listing in the water quite badly. I never once caught a glimpse of it in the lights of another ship, I only knew it was a battleship, and I'd managed to wound it severely.

I continued to track it via the hydophones, noting that its engine noises were gradually getting slower....and slower....and slower.....and in SH3, slowing engines are the signs of a dying ship

Eventually it appears a fire broke out in the forward turrents, and she sank 30 minutes roughly after the three impacts of my torpedos. Its a pity I never saw her graceful shape properly in the light of day through my scope. It would've made the kill much sweeter. Didn't get any trouble at all from the escorts, as I was right in among their ships, they never found me, which made my job slipping away alot easier. Rather than be greedy, I slipped away to leave the convoy continue on its merry way for me to hunt elsewhere.

Its funny, when I loaded the save I said to myself "after two miserable patrols with nothing to show for it, I'm going to bag something big tongight"....how right I was

Well, its done. I've sunk my first battleship, here's hoping its not the last, though I feel the next sinking may be a long long way away

Here's a screenie of U100's logbook:

Got awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, Clasp and War badge for my efforts. No Ritterkruez yet haha. But I have had the Knights cross with Gold Oak leaves, swords and diamonds before

Congratulations.

The biggest warship that I've sunk was a Dido class cruiser. I used 1 torpedo & put a big hole in her bow and she drove herself under with her own inertia. That was fun!

I seriously damaged King George V once near Tobruk. It was overcast in really rough seas. I shot 2 torpedos into her which caused a really nice list and fires but her escorts drove me down. By the time that I could safely surface she had limped away & I lost her.

Well done, Herr Kaleun! Now you have to sink a carrier and a big liner (if you haven't already, that is).

Good job with that BB?

I have been playing this game for 2 1/2 years( off and on for the first year and a half) and I have never been in position to take out one of those BIG WHALES.

I play GWX3 and have NEVER see any of these things you call Battleships!
