Default Long Time Lurker Taking the Plunge!

Greetings!

Yes I have been lurking around this wonderful form for 4 years, just dieing to take command of my own boat & get to the task of dispatching Allied shipping to the briny deep! Well, I'm finally taking the Plunge.

What took me so long you ask? Well you see I have always owned an apple computer. So I just hoped that one day the sim would get ported over to Mac, of course it never did. For a long time, Mac did have a few titles. I loved the old sub games of Silent Service and the U-boat & U-boat 2 Drumbeat games. In fact, up until just a few weeks ago I was still playing U-boat 2 on very old Mac running system software that was gosh close to 15 years old. Unfortunately it all came to an end when the old gal up and finally die on me. So with my current Mac already 6 years old and my inability to get any U-boat fix at all. I bit the bullet and pony'd up for a new computer. Well, not new new but new enough that my dreams of playing Silent hunter III & IV are now a reality.

So new Mac in hand I quickly dedicated a hard drive to windows ( ya it just didn't feel right doing that ) Got the encore versions of silent hunter II & III. I have spent the last 5 days Attending Naval Academy practicing Contact Interception, Manual Targeting, & Evasion techniques that you all have taught me so much about here! I can almost recite from memory Wazzoo's post and "the Hunt" thread! I was worried that I would still be woefully unprepared. But you all have taught me so much, my fears seem misplaced. I quickly progressed through the tutorials once I got got accustomed to the inner works of the U-boat. So I believe I'm ready for my first Patrol! But there is one last thing that must be done before I shove off. And what is that you ask!

Why install Grey Wolves Gold of Course!

I figure I've seen enough of Stock to appreciate how good a subsim it is, but for my first Patrol I must make it the best possible sim it could be. It seems clear by this forum that it is a must have! So next up some Mod installing!

So once again greetings to all! and a thank you in advance for answering all those “newbie questions” I have in front of me.

Welcome aboard, Rustbucket!! I was a lurker for a long time, too. Its always good to hear those who appreciate SH3 and all the improvements the modders have made over the years. Share some of your experiences with the rest of us.

WELCOME ABOARD!

I too used to be an exclusivist. In my case it was the Atari, until they went out of business. I got my first PC in '96 (I suspect I'm a bit older than you), just so I could play the original Silent Hunter.

You're gonna love SH3!

welcome to the pack

i hope gwx isn't too much of a plunge for you, it's not a bad idea to sail though a stock career first, for practise etc

either way, good luck on the career

What a nice post.
Hello and welcome to our little home here at Subsim
My own feelings are go straight for the gwx version. Yes its harder but you can always play at 50 or so percent realism. Also of course the early start of the war breaks you in fairly gently.
