Not alot to enjoy really, when so much is made of U-boat commanders supposedly giving orders to machine gun crews of life boats, they had no such hesatation in machine gunning a u-boat crew who were obviously abandoning ship and jumping into the waterone rule for the victor another for the vanquished, and history is written anew:hmm:

Apparently this was done to keep the crews from re-boarding and scuttling the boat. I haven't heard of a case where the u-boat crews were machine gunned after getting in the water, but remember there are guns on deck, and they are near where the crew would get out, and you don't want to give them a chance to man them.

Oh I understand the reasoning behind it,but once someone has jumped in the sea from a U-boat that your pretty sure you've DC'd the crap out of to carry on filling it(and anyone else trying to jump) full of lead is still rather a bit much, someone leaving a boat to take his chances in the atlantic is making quite a definitive decision.sometimes the actions of the allies seem somewhat malicious to say the least, they are lucky that someone on board a ship when U123 came to the surface had the forsight to stop them ramming it otherwise we would never have cracked the enigma.I wonder how many times in the past the chance came along to capture a U-boat was lost because the overiding desire was one of vengance and destruction, understandable but still distasteful.

I think this was another case of panicky over-reaction. We are seeing a lot of that in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Amazing that although the u boat is so damaged it has to surface, they continue to kill it as though it is some sort of wild beast, and to look at the crew photos they look the same as you and i. not devils, or madmen, just fellow human beings following orders.

We should send them a copy of SHII then they would not have anytime
for any other reaction.

I'm afraid thats very much my reading of it as well,no attempt to rescue crew to gather intelligence or get any intel of the boat.A myth was painted about how the U-boat crews were heartless beasts who would machinegun people in lifeboats and such like, and you'd be supprised how still that myth prevails, yet very little coverage is known of the fate's dealt out to the u-boats crews at the hands of the allies even when trying to surrenderghastly business.

Very strange. It seems that the uboat was unaware of the destroyer presence until the very last moment. Shouldn’t the sonarman be able to detect the warship presence if the destroyers already detected the uboat.
