Default Things finally went my way.

I hit a convoy contact north if Ireland coming straight at me. "I like this" I say to myself. I go at peri. depth, 500 meters to the side of the lead destroyer @ 1 kn. It is 2AM in Dec. 1939, so I am not so concerned about being discovered. I raise Periscope to see whats for supper... 1 Ammo. ship, 2 Ore carriers and 2 Large merchants and other smaller ships. I have 9 torps left.

While I am looking around, the destroyer cuts directly behind me at 750 meters and I oblige his error by sending him to the briny deep.

I then hit the Ammo ship, an ore carrier. and disable a large merchant. By now my stern tube is reloaded and I am eyein' a Pass/cargo directly behind me as a trailing destroyer is coming up on me, fast. I hurry and fire on the passanger ship; and wouldn't you know it... the last destroyer bravly leaps into the torpedo's path and joins his brother!!!

So I surface to find a scattered batch of ships in diarray and order the gun crew to their station. I fire on a Small freighter to the stardoard and in one shot goes up in a tremendous ball of flame. Sunk with one shot!

So I run and gun for the better part of an hour sinking 8 more ships including a brit' sub. I run out of ammo and have only 1 torp left and 4 Echo boats crash the party and forced me to leave.

Damage: minor paint scrapage from the British subs MG to my conning tower. Tally: 67,500 tons sunk.

U 46: Returning to base

Thank you, nikbear, B4 anyone asks... GWX 2.0.

I've never had a merchant go up with 1 shot before. Lucky shot?

Well done, Herr Kaleun

I think I attacked the same convoy last night (Dec 24/25 1939). During three surface attacks on the same night I sank Ammunition ship, 2 Large Merchants, 2 Ore carriers and Medium cargo.

The first attack was the best. I fired 2 eels at Ammo ship (4km away) and 1 to Ore carrier 2 minutes later to achieve simultaneous impacts. Then I rushed on paralel course to attack the second Ore carrier. One minute later all 3 torpedoes hit their targets, and I was caught by multiple spotlights and under heavy gun fire. Zig zaging like crazy at flank speed, I reached the Ore carrier, fired and dived deep. It was hectic, but I escaped undamaged. All three ships sank.

Yes and no, I've had it happen to me a couple of times. Just the luck of the draw and where your shell lands! A good reason not to get too close to a ship, as if it goes up, it might take you as well.
