i think in the game they degrade sonar return by a very small percentage. - unfortunately the coating is not enough to save your hide in lieu of poor tactics or decision making. - in other words it wont make you "invisible"

In real life? good question, i dont know of any data to support whether or not the material worked well at all.

seem to remember a post about how it would often come off the boat in chunks.

IMHO, it was just another one of the latest gimmicks

IIRC, the anti sonar coating reduces a chance of detection by 10%, the improved coating by 20%.
I'd say it's worth it.

Not sure about real life...

ANYTHING that reduces the ability of the destroyers to detect your u-boat is a very, very, very good thing!

Just don't let the technology serve as a substitute for smart tactics.

Now go slip that rubber onto your boat!

Slap the coating on, it will reduce your detectability by 10%. Every little bit helps

Thank you, Red Heat.

If I thought strapping fuzzy pink bunny slippers to my bow would reduce my ASDIC reflection, I'd do it!

Now all I really want is an inflatable u-boat decoy...loaded with enough Torpex to blast any escort to the moon when they drop depth charges on the decoy!

From what I've read early on they had problems with Alberich shedding pieces (kind of like a dog shedding a winter coat). These bits & pieces would hang loosely to the U-Boat and make noise, making the boat more detectable.
