Wow, I'm very impressed that you guys are attacking convoys that late (especially 1943) and not getting detected? How far away are you shooting, and what do you do after shooting to evade (dive fast, slow, turn away, etc.)? I'm kind of suprised that escorts haven't gotten close enough to detect you with what should be improved sonar. Unless that hasn't come online yet (is that mid-1943?). Keep up the good work!

Here is the latest one ive done.
U-45 type Viib First i went is and blasted the three distroyers head on, then I surfaced. There is only one corvette left. We had a surface battle.:p (I one) then I went in and shredded the convoy to shreads, not one shell or torpedo left on my boat. ![]() sank over 60,000 tons in less than a week. ![]() ![]()

Total: 48,680 tons. Six torpedoes used. Found this one off Newfoundland, steering SW at 9 knots. Had to do an end-around at high speed to get into a good shooting position. All four torpedoes hit, one on each of the above. The first three sank within 30 minutes of being hit. The troopship came to a stop. After two hours the escorts gave-up and rejoined their convoy so I snuck up and put two more into the trooper to finish him off. By this time the convoy was well over the horizon, and it was broad daylight, so I didn't pursue. |

Once the DD come to 5-6km I slow down to 1kt, and completely stop once they are 2-3km away. I keep my periscope down, and raise it only shortly to get the data. My targets were 3.5-4 km away, but they were on the far side of the convoy. THe nearest merchant was less than 1km away, the leading DD passed about 1.5km from me, and the flanking one was about 2km away. As soon I fire last torpedo, I start diving, very slow at 1kt, and alter my course some 30°.

September 20th, 1939
U-19 IIA 1900 hours snuck into the docks at Dover under cover of dark, rain and fog. Sunk a tramp steamer as well as a small merchant. 5000 tons. Observed an American merchant and Norwegian ship in dock. The bridge took a few rounds from a small patrol boat when a wave dipped and left the tower exposed. |

My two cents
April 1940 Base Wilhelmshaven
IXB Fully loaded, Crew in excellent spirits Was headed for Liverpool as we have noticed that a few large convoys have originated from there and sure enough as we rounded scapa flow, another appeared to head out from there. We knew it would be a race, the convoy on a heading of ssw towards the Irish sea and who knows from there, while we race south down the Irish sea to meet them. We shot south down to the Irish sea at flank speed, at a depth of 7 meters decks awash at night, not a ship in sight, weather was raining, but seas at 5 feet and got in perfect position to intercept where the Irish and Celtic sea meet since we weren't sure if the convoy would head west into the western approaches and onto the convoy lanes headed west, or head north up into the Irish sea just as last last reported convoy out of Liverpool had done. We arrived early, and nothing. Changed depth to listen for sounds, nothing, waited a whole day dead in the water, tried various search patterns nothing. Send contact reports in hopes of luring the escorts to come look for us, nothing. Decided to give up and head back north for liverpool and as soon as we did, the contact report came in stating that the convoy was south of us! Some how we missed it. It was travelling at 8 knots, we were at flank. I hate that. Oh well the birth place of the Beatles will pay for their crimes! Last edited by HuskerNlincoln; 09-23-08 at 03:27 PM. |

June 7th, 1943. EJ69.
17:40 Received a convoy report from BdU, coming right at me. Course 180, speed 6kt. Taking a position for attack. A few tankers, medium cargoes, ore carriers and several small merchants. Protected by 6 escorts. 20:22 firing 2 torpedoes at Ore carrier. Distance 3.8km. Destroyer closing from port. 20:24 firing 2 torpedoes at Medium cargo. Diving. Speed 1kt. 20:26 4 explosions, almost all at the same time. ![]() 20:41 Medium cargo going down ![]() Ore carrier continues to sail with unchanged speed, apparently undamaged after 2 torpedo hits. ![]() 22:25 Surfacing in order to make another attack. Wish me luck. ![]()
