your radio officer is intercepting broadcasts for help from sinking merchants.

since only the kriegsmarine uses grid references like BF17 for example... merchants deal with lat/long. so you will get lat / long and the name of the ship

for example

"Sinking! attacked! S.S.S. 46.44N 14.63W SS Amazon"

"S.S.S." means that they were attacked by a submarine.

now... all that being said, these radio messages are built into GWX to give you the sensation that there is a war going on. in reality, if you managed to sail to the location of the sinking ship you wouldnt see anything, but the radio messages are included to add to realism.

Some messages on the other hand will be quite real.

like being informed of the bismarck in need of assistance in a specific grid square. if you go there you can try to asssist in the bismarcks final show down.

also radio messages regarding the invasion of Norway etc.

its all in the manual

Nothing like a nice self-contradiction to round out the afternoon.

"In SH3, if you managed to sail to the location of the sinking ship you wouldnt see any sinking ship! but the radio messages are included to add to immersion."

Immersion helps atune the mind to a level of imaginery realism....how much so is up to what the mind considers that level of realism to be.

Or something like that :p
