Grrrrr, No Hoochie-woochie
Again, Balz's career will not load. Single mission and other career work fine. Anyone have any idea what could be causing it? Or how to fix?
I just get the SH3 has encountered a problem and needs to close screen. ![]()

Maybe Balz is unhappy because you won't write a book about him.

Ha! It would be fun to write a book with Balz as protagonist. Alas, I doubt there is a market for it

Sounds like a corrupted save. The only thing I know is to go back to the next previous save and try it. Keep doing this until you find one that will load. I've had this problem a couple of times, and make frequent saves in case it happens again, so I won't lose too much game time. Hmmm a book staring Balz...he would not be able to get his head through the conning tower hatch it would be so swelled up.:rotfl:

Well, there are 12,500 registered members here at the Radioroom.
I realize that number is too small to even be considered a niche market, especially with publishing companies always complaining their cost vs. profit margin is so slim. If it isn't a violation of the contract with your publisher, perhaps a rousing tale of Balz could be electronically published here in the forum as installments, in the fashion of the old pulp and modern literary mags, or as an e-book with the story published in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word format for download. It's a puzzle to me as well why Balz's career seems to be the only one affected, Brag. I truly do wish I had the gift to merely point and declare, "This is exactly the cause and this is how you fix it." I'm no expert, but it seems to me that Jaesen, being the author of SH3 Commander, ought to be the resident sage on career files. Try giving him a PM and see if he can help or point you to the person who can. Just to make sure it's not a problem elsewhere with Windows, run Scandisk to check your hard drive for errors in the file system then defragment the drive. This will at least help rule out any obvious faults in Windows. It can take a while use Scandisk if you have a very large hard drive and Defrag can take up to a day if you have filled that drive with files. However, the average user can expect Scandisk to spend about 20 minutes doing its thing and defrag will require a few hours. I recommend a well-aged bourbon or dark rum with a good cigar to fortify yourself while enduring this task. As a general rule of thumb, it's a good idea to use Scandisk at least monthly to check your files and folders for errors. Weekly checks aren't really necessary unless you're a heavy power-user or master hacker that puts your box through the wringer almost daily. Is this trouble with Balz the only errors you've encountered lately or have you also been getting errors with other things, not just SH3? [EDIT] Wow! This makes my 300th post! The Radioroom must be home because I've never had anywhere near this much to say in other places. I'm averaging 100 posts per month? I talk too much! LOL. (But you were warned about this in my very first posting.)

The "encountered a problem" and no load has affected me a few times. Once I did a save and a couple of seconds later I did save and quit and my next reload encountered a problem. I dont know what the problem is and it seems to be a major one. This seems to be a problem that everyone is experiencing, which I think would call for an investigation. But I am not really that computer savvy so I wouldnt even know where to begin.

You can try this , it worked for me most of the time:
Go to your Saves/ career and drag highest number patrol folder (they are numbered from 0 to whatever) to your desktop.Don't delete it yet. Now start game as you usually do (SH3 com or whatever) and you will be back in base before patrol. After that you should be able to start your last patrol again. You will lose that specific patrol , but beats losing whole career. If that doesn't work , repeat draging out patrol folder one by one till you get to working one. Your last saves got corupted , so i doubt that you can recover them ![]() |

You know, it's a terrible thing to realize you're finally getting feeble-minded.
Brag, I believe you and everyone else who are having corrupted career saves may share a common problem. I stress this is a "may" and not "certain" because this information was found in a dusty, cobwebbed corner of my mind. As I recall, SH3 does not get along well with some anti-virus software, such as Norton and McAffee. The reson for this is the AV software's "Real-time monitor" or "Resident Shield" or whatever they call it, runs in the background, quietly checking all file read/writes to make sure there's no virus activity on your system. The trouble starts when SH3 is trying to save a career. The AV monitor briefly intercepts this save because it's making sure that a virus is not infecting the saved file and that SH3 is not doing anything to cause your system to be infected. This has the unfortunate effect of disrupting SH3's read/write access, of which it expects to have complete and unfettered control. Despite the AV monitor's attempts, SH3 will simply drop the bytes in the queue and move on to the next one. The bits of the file that are still tied up in the clutches of the AV monitor never get written or arrive late, thus scrambling the contents of your game save! My advice to SH3 players is to disable or shut down your resident antivirus monitor before starting SH3. Use the Task Manager to make sure the av monitor is really shut down. It's fairly common to go through all the gryrations of clicking the system tray icon and exiting the program but the core executables are still loaded in the background where they can only be shut down by using the Task Manager. Stupid security software vendors! ![]() Hope this helps you, Brag! Spread the word to the other unfortunate souls for me, would you? On the advice of a friend, I'm off to the General section of the forums. ![]()
