Default What was that sound off our hull?

I have been close to many sinking ships in my career. But this was too close for comfort. A good third of my crew had to change their shorts including myself. I don't think we will ever get that smell out of our ship.

Here’s what happened, I’m order by the BDU to patrol ET53. A long cruise for my old VIIC U-boat, she’s been acting up lately. I believe it has to do with her time of the month if you get my meaning.

Anyhow I finish off 2 nice cargo ships along the way. Nearing CG 87 I gets a report by a nearby U-boat attacking a large convoy. So I’m close I have 9 torpedoes left my crew is aching to sink some ships. We make some course corrections. 3 hours later we are ahead and waiting for the prey.

1 am in the morning my weapons officer see’s a black swan destroyer. We dive to periscope depth. I say get the aft torpedo’s ready. We’ll wait till she gets behind us. Bam she’s hit and starts sinking. Great I’m saying now we have a nice big opening in the front column. My sonar guy tells me 5 more destroyers surrounding us. Huh what did you say?

I order the nav officer to plot a course directly into the middle of the convoy. I’m guessing big bertha ships are right there waiting for us. Nobody hears us yet so I take a peak. Oh yes I see some ship have been damage already and my luck a large tanker heading to me. I check behind me to see who’s limping for my master distraction plan. One med Cargo limping so I send my last aft torpedo at it and hope it’s not a dud. This should draw off some destroyer’s hehehe.

Dang it a darn dude again. Oh well no more time Large tankers is in range and ready for my pain. 2 torpedoes hit the tanker and it isn’t looking too good for him. I leave him to his slowly dying fate.

I set myself up for a large cargo vessel and shoot off 2 more torpedoes. Dang it one hit one dud again. She too tough and moving out of my range before I can pick her off, I need to find easier prey.

My sonar guy tell me that he barely hears 2 ships limping far behind the convoy. I make course correction and head for the kill. This wolf is going for the weak injured prey. My luck one Coastal freighter and a small Merchant, but 2 destroyers searching for my comrade hmmm what to do 2 torpedoes left? I take out the Small Merchant first then finish off Coastal Freighter last. That really ticked off the destroyers. Now they were looking for me. I’m diving deep and heading away. 2 hours later I’m at 155 meters deep and came close to being pinged. Thanking god for my luck with the rough winds and waters above.

We were about to come off silent running when I hears and explosion right above us. WHAT THE HELL. Then this loud screeching sound then things rubbing off our hull? My eyes stare at my First office and we realize were under a sinking ship about to hit us. Some of our crew starts panicking. I even break a nasty sweat.

I can’t believe Small Merchant didn’t sink till it was just over us 2 hours later. But I have a horseshoe up my rearend and we barely made it back to port alive. I had to drink hard that night.

Here is the proof,

Too close that time. But still a nice successful patrol
Drinks are on me.
