Default BDU Messages Regarding Mines

Currently on my 3rd Patrol out of Wilhelmshaven using GWX 2.0. I have received a couple of radio messages from BDU regarding mines planted by the Allies east and west of Heligoland. Now I know that a lot of messages are for immersion, but in this case do I need to take extra care returning to base?

Thanks.

Yes, this message is for real.

But, was it West or was it East of Heligoland:hmm:

There are mines west of Helgoland. Hitted one while following 2 german destroyers on their way home.
No more "Cool! if they do it, i can do it too". Result was a big hole in the bottom filled with dead steel and brave men...

Thanks for the replies. Two messages received one informing me of mines east of Heligoland and the other west of Heligoland. Can't remember which came first though, but obviously I'll need to take extra care when going home.

Thanks.

The mines are all around that island. Avoid going anywhere near it after mid September 1940.

Thanks for all the replies on this. However sadly on my next patrol U-48 hit a mine off the north east coast of England due to it's captain being enticed by a convoy sailing near the coast (I was assigned Grid AN52) . I knew there were mines in the area but thought I could get away with it, I was gutted . Gustav Mindt and crew RIP.

one question to all of you. if yu find yourself in a mine field - what is the right thing to do? sail on tc1 and watch for mines on 0 degrees? or are there any other methods to avoid hiting one?

If you suddenly became aware you were in a minefield without actually setting one off (how you would know that without using the external camera I'm not sure) is to take exactly the same route out as you took in. Not sure if when your u-boat snags a mine wire whether you get the sound effects of the wire scrapping the hull or not in GWX, which would alert you to mines. I am currently reading a book about a British sub in the Med where the ASDIC operator would listen out for echoes to detect mines. Presumably this was some sort of active sonar as passive sonar wouldn't help. Perhaps someone can elaborate.

The only thing you can do is exit the way you came....on the surface, praying constantly

Damn right. I'm giving the east coast of England a wide berth in my new career.
