In civilian clothes, we're having a private party at the Restaurante Las Tunas in Vigo. Balz is sharply dressed in his London banker's outfit and new Knight's Cross on his neck. The rest of the crew look like a bunch of beggars rescued from a sinking garbage scow.

"Promotion? I didn't get a promotion either," Balz bellows as he slurps wine. Us great heroes are treated like DDD, dirty dog dung. I need a new way to sign my name so that BDU knows who they are dealing with."

"That sounds like a circus act," I answer.
"Our U-Boot is a circus. We have a bunch of clowns for a crew. And my Bernard taming act is worth three stars."
Balz waves his arms. "Einz, zwei..."
"Hoochie woochie," the crew answers in unison.
The singing ends any attempt at conversation. I have a new German Cross. Maybe I'll go and parade with Balz at the Wilhelmshaven railway station when we get back to Germany.
