It's really simple actually. If you want to survive in GWX you have to try to think like a U-Boat captain and be very careful. For everything else you can just read the manual

Best tip is to get the manual and read it end to end. Highly instructive and infromative reading.

Stay safe and out of the channel!

Just remember:

When you're submerged, they can't see you (duh)
When you're surfaced, they can't hear you
When you're deep enough, they can't ping you
They don't have to have heard you first before they start pinging you (see the GWX Uber AI sticky)
When it's dark they can't see as well
When it's stormy they can't hear as well
When they detect you in shallow waters... kiss good bye to your a***

Unlike stock SH3 1943 is now 100% harder and the war is now 100% against you, you have to learn what to go after and what not to. Try the early years first 39-41 and give them hell but note 1942 is in the balance so you better get up to speed if you want to survive.

If you want to get away from most of the Allied air cover in 1944 get a IXD2 Boat and join the 10th flotilla down under at Penang.

Good luck to you, your going to need it.

I have to disagree Steed, why not try a 1945 mission first, get your cage seriously rattled and almost certainly get yourself killed by the first ship you meet, but remember the lessons you learned for your patrol starting in 1939

or is this the masochists way of dealing with GWX?

Even Herr Ziepel is having troubles in mid 1944!

I nearly got my ass blown off when Tommy decided to crap his bubble-bombs down on me in the good 'ol English Channel.

Take some time to study a convoy before attacking. Watch and learn the escort's patterns.

But as said above, what works in '40 you'll find is suicide in '44.

1. Learn how to swim.
2. Make sure you pass out water wings to all your crew (Make sure they're the ones with the little duckies on them. The duckies make them float better). Make SURE they're handed out especially if you're on your seccond outting or later. Diapers may also be a must for some crews.
3. Get swearing, cursing, and waving your arms around in exasperation down to a science.
4. Don't try to secure or eliminate Bernard as this will still somehow result in disaster for you and your crew in some shape or form.
5. Keep your finger on the "Crash Dive" button throught your whole mission.
6. Make sure you have a good store of food and drink at hand due to the fact that you won't want to leave your computer ever again.
7. Stay out of Der Kanal !
8. STAY AWAY FROM THE BRITISH COAST OR THE ENGLISH CHANNEL !

Basically think of it as a two part game.

1939 - abouts 42, you should be able to reap havoc very effectively. You're goal, search and destroy.

1943 - 45, you're goal, survive. Literally. At this stage in the war, you need all your tricks, and then some. In a nutshell, here, the goal is not to sink things and reap havoc its to simply not get killed, and if you should happen to see a lone target then engage that.

You can attack convoys, but, you will need to be ahead of them, submerged and then you'll have to fight your way in probably, and when you do get in and unload the bow tubes and then go deep, chances are you're gonna die.

Decoys. Make sure you have them. They will if used right save your life.

This is not to say GWX is impossible it isn't, but its made to simulate the U-boat war better, and if you are going to make it through, you need to think as though you are there.
