Have you tried it yet? How's it look?

I held off on 7.9 because it got trashed by users for some problems it had.

There's also a ROM flash update out for the x1950, but can't find any info on what it does for you. Has anyone read anything about it?

7.9 wouldn't work at all with my X1950 Pro AGP (there was even a disclaimer on the release notes saying it might not work with AGP cards). With the 7.10 I didn't notice an comment that this was fixed unless of course I overlooked it. Does anyone here know if this has been addressed? I'm still using 7.8s with no problems so it's not a big deal . . . but I always like to look for improvements.

They have been busy, and unfortunately, the "improvements" have not been universal. I had big problems with both 7.8 and 7.9, so I'm still using 7.7. Not sure what's going on over at ATI, but they need to get their act together.

They got bought by AMD. You'd think that would be an improvement, but it hasn't looked that way.

Yeah, I know, and I figured it would be an improvement too. I've used an AMD processor for years and think they're great, and my last two video cards have been ATI, but this sloppy driver business has me starting to wonder.

Nothing is more sloppy than those recent two driver releases where they basically said that if you have an AGP card, too bad . . . stick with the previous driver. I mean puhleeeeze! I just recently bought this dang X1950 Pro AGP card to tide me over until I can switch to a new system with PCI Express and already they don't want to support it? With 7.8 I got screwed-up desktop icons, but that cleared up and went away after one reboot. With 7.9 my PC wouldn't even boot into Windows XP unless I was in safe mode (which I had to do to uninstall the drivers). I can understand dropping support for a series of cards that's 4 or 5 generations old, but the x1950 isn't that dang old! Oh well, SH4 is running nicely and it's the main game I'm playing so it's not bad.

Well well, the 7.10s installed and run for me. I've been checking posts at DriverHeaven.net and some people apparently still have problems, so go figure. My card is an HIS X1950 Pro Turbo 521 MB but I don't know if the particular manufacturer of your Radeon makes a difference.

SH4 runs fine but it's too early to tell if there is any improvement. These drivers also have Adaptive Anti Aliasing, but I don't know enough about it to tell if it will affect SH4. It says about Adaptive AA:
Quote:
Adaptive anti-aliasing is a technique that applies a combination of multi-sampling (MSAA) and super-sampling (SSAA) on 3D objects to improve edge smoothness and fine detail. This feature renders 3D objects containing transparencies more realistic, providing exceptional levels of image quality while maintaining performance.
So, not sure if that applies to SH4.

just took it for a spin with SH3 and there seems to be a bit of an improvement. as for them ROM, couldn't tell ya, but usually there's a chance something might've be fixed

So the sun glare is still missing..? Cool, based on all of those cases when I was in contact with ATI's customer service, it's a driver issue but how the hell it can be so hard to fix?! Hell, maybe it really is a hardware issue but that glare effect in SH4 is pretty much the same as it is in SH3 and in SH3 it works just as it should. Or at least it used to work. Don't know has this changed with these newer "improved" drivers

Yeah yeah, I know. Complaining about that glare is kind of stupid 'cause it's such a small problem but that was the reason why I was complaining about that when I still had an ATI card

Well, can't say that I've had any regrets for switching from ATI to Nvidia. Besides, now I can play Open Falcon without any driver problems

This driver did not work for me. I loaded it up and when I went to start the game it said "3D Engine could not be started". Back to 7.7 for me. Just as well, I had no issues with 7.7 anyway. I see no improvment from the readme for SH4. Just a handful of other games are reaping some benefits.

I had some hopes because of the new 'multisample adaptive AA' modes, but no good - no sun glare for ATI X1K cards, yet.

Reading the release notes from the last several driver versions it's obvious Vista and the FPS/RPG games are driving the recent spate of releases. This particular release added new chipset support. As most of you have figured out, no big performance increases directed at the types of games we play in recent versions.
I don't recall any update that didn't have something in there for Half Life.

Adaptive AA has been around for a while. It's not new in this release. It's in 7-7.

Don't hold your breath on the Sun glare effect. The developers and ATI are going to have to meld minds to make that happen and I don't think either of them are interested. The game is obviously coded and optimized for NVidia and ATI is along for the ride (where only compatible features coded into the graphics engine work the same.) Is sun glare a defect in ATI drivers? I doubt it. Anyone who plays Falcon4 or Fight Simulator will have to admit they see plenty of sun glare in those games on ATI cards. There's no doubt in my mind the devs aren't interested in changing the code that renders that effect in the way the ATI cards will respond to it. I don't spend any time staring at the sun so I couldn't care less if that feature is there or not. After all, it's a photo lense effect, not a real world effect.

Where can I get that ROM flash update for the ATI X1950?

Is it valid for all the brands?? (I have a GeCube ATI X1950 XT AGP card).

Thank you very much for your help !!
