Default My first Dolphin! Too cool!

I had just finished getting refueled and a new load of torps from the milkcow, out of Caldiz. I was pulling away from the milkcow when I spotted someting in the water. It was darked so I hit F12 and zipped over to find.....a Dolphin!
Wish it was day time for the shot that I took.

It was swimming backwards away from the sub, squeaking and clicking away. Too cool!

That is really cool!
Could you hear it from your hydrophone, or just from F12ing over to it for this photo?

I didn't think to jump on the Hydro's. The sound I heard was zipping over on external.

After I took the shot, I looked around, there was actually 4 of them playing around!

Hehe, I remember seeing them when we'd pull out of Norfolk and Charleston in real life.

I assume that as a unit it went into anti-collision mode just like ships do when they get too close to one another.:hmm:

Do they crash and burn when they hit land too?

I think I've heard Dolphins/Whales on my hydrophone before, went off in search of them but to no avail.

Hey, I just thought of something. I was in port when I saw these guys (warm water too, we're talking near the Med.)

I don't know if the dolphins are put there where the waters are warm and close to ports.
I do know in real life, that's how it works! Every time I saw Dolphins on my ships it was always close to port, but I saw them much more frequently in Charleston and down in the Caribbean.
And we always liked to see them, not only did we think of them as a good omen, but seeing Dolphins close to your ship means: no Sharks! That's something we always liked to know!

If you have time to blow, try going to Caldiz like I did, you might see them!

Hi!

The GWX Dev Team consensus is: the dolphin was trying to avoid a collision.

Being as SH3 models ships and not dolphins (the game engine treats the dolphin as a highly specialized "ship"), the dolphin reversed course to avoid a collision rather than dive under or go around. There's only so much computer power a game can put into dolphin collision avoidance logic without slowing down the framerate, and this was apparently one of the compromises.

If you switch from English to German voices... and set English text... You'll discover a whole new dimension to GWX. A lot of work went into the German language bit and is how it was intended to be played.

Give it a spin. The first time you crashdive, the hair on the back of your neck will stand up!
