Default New to GWX

Hi all!

I've been playing SH3 for a while and just yesterday installed GWX. Hats off to the creators and a big THANK YOU! I already had a career underway and was instantly and very pleasantly surprised by 'operation Juno' in Norway (where I was by pure coincidence). It'll take some getting used to some aspects (positive buoyance for example...) but all in all I was rather blown away.

One thing I do have trouble with is the "grey ship icons" that appear on the map. Does anybody know how I can get back my red/blue/green ones?

Oh, and a word of caution to others looking to try GWX... returning to port last night (just a couple of km's out) I was immersed in the GWX manual and Bernard had the conn. Next thing I know are the shouts of "Das boot ist be
beschädigt"...

Bernaaaard!!! In his defence though, he states being overawed by all the new things and traffic in port now.

Good hunting!

Benny

I'm also new to GWX, and I really like what I'm seeing! The world seems to be much more "alive" than it used to be in stock. Actually, my PC is a bit too old to comfortably run SHIII with GWX, but it's worth the loading times! Great job, GWX developers! SHIII + GWX is what SHIII should have been from the start, imho.

Yesterday, I was doing a patrol very early in the war, just off the British coast, southwest of Scapa Flow. I had sank two merchants the night before and was trying to intercept a contact when suddenly I am attacked by two aircraft. I didn't have time to see them, I dived so fast. I'm barely beneath the waves, when suddenly the hydrophone operator reports a contact, warship, closing fast. It's not deep here, about 65 meters, so I drop the boat to 55, order silent running and set my speed to 1 knot. On the hydrophone, I can hear the warship closing, very fast. He is obviously alerted that there is a u-boat here. Since he is going so fast, I doubt he can hear me.

I order a 90 degree turn to starboard and set my speed to 4 knots, to put some distance between my boat and the last location the planes saw me. The warship continues to close. I wait a bit and order 1 knot again.
I can't resist going to outside view and see a destroyer approaching on a zig-zag course. Fortunately, he is heading to my last known location, doesn't know where I am. For the next hour he executes search patters and drops depth charges, but he doesn't get close and never seems to detect me. Of course, this is early in the war...
I managed to sneak out, but thanks to the delay I did miss the contact I was intercepting.

I've never had this sort of thing happen to me in stock (it's been a while since I played), as far as I can remember, a coordinated attack of planes and warships, after being in a location causing trouble for a while. So it this GWX I'm seeing?

Be aware, side effects of GWX may include dead hamsters, de-magnetised fridge magnets... and lately it may cause you to accidentally delete your saves instead of loading them.:rotfl:

Tee hee.

And yes, if they spot you, they will report your position and if help can come, it does!

GWX can also have a detrimental effect on hair colour.

Welcome one & all to GWX, enjoy it.

BTW, it's going to get a lot better.

I'm in the middle of Patrol #10 out of Kiel since installing GWX.
I also did 9 patrols in the standard SH3 & then it transferred me to Brest.

The main differences that I have run across since GWX have been a lot more DD's & Armed Trawlers in GWX. I have mostly kept my distance, but a couple of times they almost got me in that shallow water. It really made for some tense escape manuvering time.
Now I am seeing cargo ships being escorted by a lone trawler & with the rough seas it is almost impossible to hit those little buggers. If you shoot & miss you are surely a dead boat...

After a sinking you had better get away submerged also because aircraft will show up very soon. If they see you then the DD's/Trawlers will arrive shortly thereafter.

It is now August 21st 1940 & I have been informed that Bergen, Norway is now a sub base.
I can't find anything on how to transfer to that base. I don't want to go to Brest after this patrol like I had to do last time. I want to continue on in this career in the North Sea area.

Is there a way to do that instead of shipping to Brest?

I have the Commander thing installed, but haven't figured out how either stay in Kiel or ship to Bergen while keeping my same crew/boat etc...

Of course this is assuming that I make it through this patrol. Right now I have 4 DD's all around me within 10km & a convoy coming up the southern tip of the channel heading east. Things could heat up very fast shortly and the water here is only 17-25m deep...lol..

I may try & just go north on the east shore of England for a couple of squares & see if it is a bit less busy...

A tip for GWX newbies.

TURN ON GERMAN VOICES

You can leave the english text, but with the german vioces on, there are a lot more sounds that you hear. Things I never experienced till a couple of days ago, and I've had GWX quite some time.

You aren't addicted or anything are you?

You can quit anytime you like right?

<At least that's what I keep asking myself.>

Ohh that's something that always annoyed me a bit, sure there is the flottila info in the ingame help screen and the manual, but it's not by chance possible to add the location of the base into the "change flottila" screen?
