Vista Is The Black Plague Of SH4
Hi all,
As per recomendation, I have started a post about something very troubling.. Reading a post, I see someone mention the fact that you can tweak the files on your submarines .cfg files to alter the depth it can dive at.. now, I've found the files and every thing else, altered them with Notebook, come Save time, it says I am unable to do so as I don't have the correct path (wich is the same file name im altering). Now in a few PMs, it was mentioned that the dreaded Vista, may be the culprit on me being unable to alter the files, (much like the time I had to observe every file on my computer for my screenies.) Is there a solution, and if so, what may it be? Thanks in advance for your posts, Krauter

Krauter,
Yes it is Vista, and there is a solution. Vista by default does not let normal Administrative users write files under the Program Files directory. However, in order to keep applications that used to do this from breaking, it will redirect writes in this directory silently to another path somewhere else (can't remember exactly where off the top of my head). To fix this, open notepad by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting "run elevated". This will make the silent redirection not apply to notepad during its lifetime. Then open the file you want to edit in that instance of notepad and it should save fine. |

Is it me or is Vista becoming a real pain in the backside?! I've heard a lot of bad things about it and even heard that many of the functions that Vista boasts can already be used on XP!
Thankfully I'm an XP user at the moment but I'm dreading the day I have to upgrade to a new system and have to have Vista. In fact I'm thinking I might get someone to rebuild my current system so I can keep my HD and not have to use Vista, just change to a better mother board, proccessor etc. But thats a year or so off yet I think.

Well, I've tried the uninstall, set into a dif, directorie, worked fair enough, i can now save, but they don't take effect, even worse.. Im stuck using the stock SH4! I've downloaded the 1.3 patch, it says no current version exists and that it cant patch over something that doesnt exist..
With Furor.. Krauter P.S I downloaded from Ubisoft

And you deleted the hidden directory I mentioned a few posts back? You have to get rid of the hidden remnants of your default install in the AppData directory too, BEFORE you reinstall into a directory of your choice.
If you did do that, then I'm not sure what is happening, as SHIV, with patches and mods, works on my Vista Home Premium setup. :hmm: :hmm: P.S. also very important to uninstall from the control panel tool - else you'll need to edit your registry by hand before reinstalling. |

Seems to me that vista was made more friendly to the not so PC knowledgeable people.
It seems to want to take control of everything... I am happy with XP and will keep it until it is no longer viable. |

The MS downgrade to XP from Vista is not new. MS has been offering this from day one.
No doubt MS has a long way to go to make Vista popular. I expect a lot to change in the 1st service pack (I never buy a MS OS until SP1.) In the mean time, the end-of-life SP3 for XP (which will probably make it the 1st perfect OS MS has ever created) is in work. Well not perfect, but how close can you get? There's an interesting slide show Ziff Davis site put out bashing Vista. Usually computer interest/training publishers get behind new OSes because they markedly increase sales of support related/QA books and mags. I certainly won't be changing until the software I want to run is no longer available for XP and that isn't going to happen for a very long time. The more I use Vista at work, the less I like it. On the subject of drivers, it isn't Vista that caught hardware driver programmers off guard. Vista betas were available for a very long time. One of the main purposes was to allow driver makers to develop and test for Vista. Can't blame MS for that. Vista was most of two years behind on release and still was a problem for drivers, but that is the history of the undustry since 98 not just Vista. Plenty of time for programmers to get on board. Pretty hard though to ruggedly test drivers for a new platform almost no one has while game develpers are pushing the demand for driver refinements for existing hardware/Os's at lightning speed. -Pv- |
