Vista Is The Black Plague Of SH4
 

Hi all,

As per recomendation, I have started a post about something very troubling..

Reading a post, I see someone mention the fact that you can tweak the files on your submarines .cfg files to alter the depth it can dive at.. now, I've found the files and every thing else, altered them with Notebook, come Save time, it says I am unable to do so as I don't have the correct path (wich is the same file name im altering). Now in a few PMs, it was mentioned that the dreaded Vista, may be the culprit on me being unable to alter the files, (much like the time I had to observe every file on my computer for my screenies.)

Is there a solution, and if so, what may it be?

Yes it is Vista, and there is a solution.

Vista by default does not let normal Administrative users write files under the Program Files directory. However, in order to keep applications that used to do this from breaking, it will redirect writes in this directory silently to another path somewhere else (can't remember exactly where off the top of my head).

To fix this, open notepad by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting "run elevated". This will make the silent redirection not apply to notepad during its lifetime. Then open the file you want to edit in that instance of notepad and it should save fine.

Is it me or is Vista becoming a real pain in the backside?! I've heard a lot of bad things about it and even heard that many of the functions that Vista boasts can already be used on XP!

Thankfully I'm an XP user at the moment but I'm dreading the day I have to upgrade to a new system and have to have Vista. In fact I'm thinking I might get someone to rebuild my current system so I can keep my HD and not have to use Vista, just change to a better mother board, proccessor etc. But thats a year or so off yet I think.

MS anounced a free "downgrade" patch to convert Vista OS into W XP SP2 OS.

I'd say the easiest solution to the OP's problem is to install all your software into any folder OTHER than "program files". I have SHiV and SHIII in a "games" directory in my user area. This completely bypasses Vista's UAC limitations. Mods and editing work just as they did under XP, with no permission problems.

Other then the couple of tools that came with my PC (eg. DVD/CD burner app), I have not installed anything into "program files" - it's all in my user area, or in a "C:\applications" directory. You could also disable UAC from the control panel, but that may mess up OS updates and such, so it's easier to bypass UAC's obnoxious user-level intervention by not using "program files" for your apps.

Windows Vista is the "Black Plague" to most games and software. Two of my friends have it and they are so hating life right now it's laughable. Everything that they ran fine on XP is somehow tanked because of Vista! I am avoiding Vista until it becomes a mandatory upgrade. By rule of thumb you should really wait a year, perhaps even two before upgrading on a Microsoft product. Remember when Windows XP came out? Very buggy too, but give them time (A LOT of time) and they will eventually get it close to right. Nothing says "I hate you" like giving someone Windows Vista as a gift!:D

The truth of the matter is that Microsoft relys on a bunch of people buying a new windows and finding its all buggy, to track down all the glitches and duff features so that they can correct it for later releases. So in effect people who went out and bought Vista when it was released were paying Microsoft for the privelege of ironing out the bugs in their operating system which should have been done before it was released in the first place! :damn:

Thats users paying Microsoft to work for them rather than the other way round.....now you know why Bill Gates is just about the richest individual on the planet!

I wouldn't touch any new Windows for at least a year after it was released if I didn't have to. Having said that I think Vista is a bit of a dud anyway.

Sounds like Vista's NOT the problem here...but someone who doesn't fully understand how to make it work.

But if Vista bashing is all the rage..by all means!

Not me...I've never had ONE problem running SH4 with Vista Home Premium...Not one that can be OS related, that is!
Only the "normal" CTD's directly the responsibility of the unstable...beta-when-released SH4 programming. :yep:

Then by all means, answer the question so I may get rid of my tiresome troubles.

Give it a couple of months. Supprisingly the hardware manufacturers got caught off guard and dont have capable drivers yet.

I guess the folks at M$ dont tell the hardware people whats comming :hmm:

In the long run its probably a good stratigy for both of them. M$ sells a news OS and the hardware folks get to press a hole new plethora of .... well... new hardware.

Disable the UAC (User Account Control) feature in Vista.

Not sure what that does...

Not meaning to start anything nor to "snap". It's just as most every one whose had Vista will probably state, I'm having problems and it's frustration, even more so when I hear indications that I cant manage my own PC. (Again, apologies if taken as offensive). The link you posted was most insightful, however at the moment I am still not on my SH4 computer.

May I ask how you install a program into your "Games" directory, and not your "Program Files"? If this will indeed end Vistas meddling, it will help alot.
