White Cliffs of Dover

As I explained in another thread, I was forced to start up a new career. Got me a type IXB out of Whilhelmshaven, 1939. My first patrol, I'm up at AM-14. Get done with that and cruise on down the eastern side of the english isle. Followed a tramp steamer in the fog and sank her. Things were pretty much quite as things haven't geared up yet.

So I decided to take a peek at Dunkirk and see what's there.......nothing, the port was empty at this time.

A funny thought hit me. I decided to take my crew and go look at the white cliffs of Dover. Never seen them before.
Rather risky, I know, but what the heck. Maybe some excitement will shake this crew of mine up!

On the way there, I was forced to engage a J&K and a V&W. Sank both without too much fuss.
As I get closer to Dover, I get a sonar contact ahead. More than likely another destroyer, but it's not moving at all!
Since we were close enough, I pop up with the external cam and zip over to see what it was and then I'll zoom over to the cliffs.
Well, it was another V&W just sitting there. I zipp over to the cliffs.
Awwwwww. No white cliffs of Dover! Too bad.
So I take a pot shot at the Destroyer. It's overcast and pretty foggy. I used my sonar bearing line method to take the shot, not really expecting it to work as the target is over 2,600 meters away.
Wow! Got lucky! The torpedo hit and sank her!

This was too much for me. I decided to get closer to Dover, just to see what was there. Insane, I know, but still...........

I get just outside of the port, no other ships around except in the port itself. Here's what I see in my scope:

A Fiji class tied up by the sea wall!
A troop ship moored by the Fiji.
A Norwegan small merchant on fire.
2 British small merchants
A small tanker.

Rubbing my hands together while gleefully going: "Mine! All mine!" I set up my shots.
Took 3 to sink the Fiji, 2 to sink the troop ship. 1 on each British small merchant.
The Norwegian was neutral, but she sank all on her own anyways.
I put 2 in the small tanker,and she was blazing away, but never sank. I didn't have time to finish as another V&W came screaming in after me from out to sea!
I was able to take her out, but that left me with one torp, with an armed merchant and two elco's on the way. Time to leave.

Not too long afterwards, I'm about 125 Km east of Dover, when my watch calls "Ship spotted!"
Worried that it was another warship, I popped up to the bridge and looked.
MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! A big, fat large tanker, just sitting there not moving!!!!!!

I lined my self up for a great shot, at about 880 meters. She's helpless and all mine! What better way to use my last fish and end the patrol?

But what's this? A plane! It's overcast, but these buggers are flying? Rats, I"ve been spotted.
So I cut loose my torp and start heading away. Sure enough, here come reports of DD's at high speed on their way. It's definately time to git as I'm out of torps!

As I'm moving away, I hear the explosion of the torp. But no report of torpedo impact! Wha-???
&$^%$*^*^$^%#$$! The stupid torp detonated 200 meters from the target!
Grrrrrrrr!

Ah well, and here comes the calvary to save the tanker. Not enough time to man the deck gun.
Feeling like Snoopy ("Curse you Red Baron!") I slink away. There will be other tankers.

But really........Where were the white cliffs of Dover?

Dover has always been a good port for those who like performing harbour raids.

I don't think the cliffs were painted white until after the war......lack of materials for anything other than those tasks that were considered vital to the war effort

Paint ? Thought it was white bitumen that was used because of the War effort ..or somethink :hmm:

That's Calcium Carbonate (Chalk) guys!

Besides, even if it were paint, it would be long gone as the cliff's loose about 1 cm of face each year
