Default there they were - gawn

hello Mariners!

You 'ave 'ere, possibly the rookiest rookie the waves have ever seen - nothing but disaster ( due to my mismanagement) follows in my wake, and so far, in my career the only ships I have bagged outside of training have been the wrong ones.

Anyway, let me tell you of the latest mishap.. I finished my patrol in AN56, which had been without notable events, and decided to tootle down to Harwich to see if I could harrass any slow and defenceless merchants (brave I am not).

I did find a large convoy on the chart, but somehow our paths never crossed (tch), so I wandered a bit further south and came up to recharge my batteries. Bad timing. A fast patrol boat found me and let all his mates know too, so soon the area was buzzing with patrol boats, and then two or three warships.

I kept them guessing for quite a while, and saved regularly as I tried to get out of range, but in the end, they got me and that was the end of my short and un-amazing career.

Fine I thought, I shall just go back to an earlier save and try a different way of avoiding them. Maybe I can run even when 'in the red'as long as I am not being pinged, clearly creeping away in the green had not worked.

So the next time I got me sea-gear on, that is what I did. I chose an early save and took up the task of getting away from the pack again. But then I had to stop as someone was coming round the house, so I did a save and exit and that was that. After our visitor had gone, I got back into the game - and there they were- GAWN! No saves to be seen anywhere! What?

So, I have had to start all over again, and am at present trawling up and down my patrol area, after which I will again go off looking for prey. Chances are I will get spotted again and the same scenario will repeat itself, and maybe I will get deaded again too.

How can I ensure all my saves are kept safe? Why did I lose them anyway? - and they are lost; not in the careers folder. Just the new ones there. Will it work if I make a backup folder and copy them into there so I can replace them and resume a previous save if I get killed?

Humph

Are you referring to the saves before or after your last restore point? Note that little screen that pops up whenever you go to load a saved game "This action will delete all following save points!!!!" or something like that. If you go back further than the very last save game, you will loose all save games that were made after it.

Secondly.. always man your hydrophone before surfacing after some time..

Also, I always do a copy/paste backup of 'my career name' career folder somewhere else on your system outside your game folder, sometimes saved games disappear. I think it's a bug of some kind. If you use SHIII Commander, always 'roll-back' before pasting your backed up saved games into SHIII. Remember of course to delete all existing files in the newly created career folder you are pasting the backed up saves into first.

frosty, yes, I saw that screen and I understand the implications, but the saved games previous to that save should have been there still surely - that is the way it works in other games. I wondered if being killed automatically took you back to 'new career', but if that were so, I should not have been able to access the earlier save game even once - but I did.... Perhaps it is as 3Jane says, and there is a 'bug' ( in GWX?). Anyway, I shall do like Jane says and backup etc.

Yes...hydrophone, listen before popping up the snoot. I will do that in future I think it was probably because I was on compressed time, impatient to get where I wanted to go. Silly ol me...

Yup, taking a career and saving it in a non game folder does work. I did this with Kptlt Balz when reinstalling. Saved his neck, now everyone hates me

Ah she wolf
Long time no see
Still trawling the oceans eh
Good for you

Unfortunately the saves do disappear from time to time
I have had it in stock too
One of the MANY bugs SH3 comes with

The only safe way to go is as mentioned above
Save a copy of the careers elsewhere

I learnt the hard way playing in an online campaign a couple of years ago
Lost my save and had to play catch up with all others

From then on I save a copy if playing properly
ATM am only using test careers so not bothered
They usually die anyway
:rotfl:

Out of practice
