"What do you mean the conning tower is gone? Where's Benard?????"
yep, looks like it's going to be one of "those" careers! I just started up another career, Sept. 1939, type VII U-45 out of Kiel. I used the canal this time! ![]() Was assigned a spot just off Norway and waited for the war to start. Got done patroling, We've attacked Polen, so now one more day and England will be in the fray. Weather has been bad, heavy seas and overcast skies, heavy fog. Ended patroling my assigned sector and came about to head towards Scapaflow, when sonar picks up a track! I start to follow, surfacing for bursts of speed, and submerging to pick up the track again. Man this guy is hard to track down. Finally I get close enough to use the external cam and I race into the fog. There it is! A Norwegion sea going tug! Bah! Now that I've wasted a lot of time and energy, I head to Scapaflow. Get to the east side, but decide to use my camera again. Will it be worth trying to get in? What secrets are hiding in Scapaflow. 1 large tanker and 4 destroyers. Bah again. Not worth it! Will this bad weather ever end? So I head to the english channel, bad weather all the way. But that's good. The bad weather holds all the way through the channel and I get through unscathed. At the other end, sonar picks up another track, this time a war ship! Seas are still a bit on the heavy side, but all that fog went away. It's 0215 though, so nice and dark. Turns out it's a V&W destroyer, headed away from me at about 11 knots. I sneak up to about 2,850 meters (insane I know, but I guess their aft look out watch was asleep!) and dive to periscope depth. I'm in their shadow so they won't hear me. For some strange reason they slow down to 6 knots. I'm turning my screws for 8 knots and get closer and closer. Their course has held steady with no "S" ing around. I cut loose a torp. BAM! That got their attention! It also sank them! Cheered me up quite a bit! Next day, weather gets worse again! Won't this end? Radio contact of an enemy convoy, I set up an intercept course. A few hours later, the seas are still kind of rough, but the fog is gone. Wow! 20 ships! Unescorted!!! I line up slightly behind a big fat whaling factory ship, just aft of her port quarter and cut 2 torps loose, one for the bow and one for the engine room. 2 hits! She's going down! Slowly, but she is sinking! Yay! Just ahead of her is a large tanker, she's next! I lower my scope and increase to flank speed............ and slammed my conning tower into the keel of the sinking Whale Factory ship! ![]() ![]() Headed back, as the entire tower has been destroyed, scopes and all. BdU was a little ticked with me I guess. As now it's 20 days later and I just got assigned to sector An-14...........*gulp* wish me luck! |

Hmmm, this could easily have been avoided if you had followed proper procedure, that early in the war you're supposed to surface, order the merchies to heave to and have their papers inspected, now If they're carrying war-materiels you sink them, if not, leave them alone.
Since they were unescorted that's what you should have done ![]() ![]() Now, I realise that they would've steamed on regardless, which would be your excuse to sink a number with eels and then take the rest on with your deckgun, that would also have avoided the unfortunate collision :rotfl: I'm sure your flotillenchef was not amused :p U-boats don't grow on trees you know... |
