I started my first career in an IX boat out of Lorient in 1940. On my first patrol I was heading to my patrol zone and just east of the rockwell? banks I received a report of a convoy. I promptly moved into position to intercept and started to scan the convoy.
Smack dab in the middle was a Nelson BB and there appeared to be only three escorts (a flower in the front and two others on the flank). I tool a little risk and went ahead standard while submerged after the lead flower had passed. I figured their sensros probably weren't very good at this time in the war. I got to within 1000m and sent 2 elecs and 2 steam torps into the BB and put her dead in the water. I dived deep and was never detected. I surfaced an hour later and finished her off with a final fish. How is that for a morale boost for a crew to sink a BB in their first encounter in their first patrol. Now to do an end around and harass the convoy somemore.....I saw some tankers in their as well ![]() |
